Axiflux to revolutionize the electric motor | Adventure Capital

In November of 2012, Adventure Capital made a seed investment into Axiflux, a revolutionary re-design of the electric motor that makes a number of?significant?improvements on the traditional design, including marked improvements in power, weight, efficiency, reliability and cost.

Axiflux? is the creator of the Adaptive Magnetic Flux Array? (AMFA): The world?s first modular, real-time, software-reconfigurable electric motor and generator. Relative to a traditional electrical motor, the innovative configuration and control of the AMFA yields significant size, weight and price reductions, while increasing power output, efficiency and reliability.

The Axiflux? AMFA has been in development since 2008 from Melbourne, Australia. The patent pending technology combines a number of significant and disruptive improvements to electrical motor/generator (machine) technology with a wide-ranging suite of applications. Prototype motors are currently being trialled in applications where this technology improvement is most needed.

The development of the AMFA began with the recognition that the electrical machine is the cornerstone of modern life and the facilitator of nearly everything in 21st century society. From generating electrical energy at our power stations to starting our cars in the morning, the humble electricmotor/generator has changed relatively little over the past 100 years. The electrical machine generates over 90% of the world?s electricity and uses over 45% of it.

The key difference between the Axiflux? machine and its traditional counterpart is that the AMFA?s multiple coils can be controlled independently and intelligently by computer software that is able to use real-time optimization, artificial intelligence and neural network processing in order to respond to operating conditions. Depending on the operational requirements, a motor may be optimized for efficiency or power, at any time and for any speed. This compares to the traditional electric motor where the efficiency optimization was performed by engineers for a particular speed and built into the control system at the time of manufacture.

Axiflux is building the core technology for a range of applications ? both in the motor and generator space. As part of the product roadmap, there are several variants of the motor undergoing research and development at present. On the horizon are the single phase AC motor (suitable for pumps, air-conditioning units and consumer applications), the DC traction motor (suitable for direct-drive electric vehicles), and the high voltage three-phase AC motor (for applications in mining and power generation).

In line with Adventure Capital?s active management style, Axiflux is receiving significant in kind input from the team. Darcy Naunton has taken the role of CFO and Stuart Richardson is President of Corporate Development. We expect to maintain these roles until such time as the funding from subsequent rounds is sufficient to hire external professionals to takeover these positions.

In August 2012, Axiflux was awarded the national iAward for Startup of the Year[1].
