'The Hobbit' stays atop box office for third week

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" continues to rule them all at the box office, staying on top for a third-straight week and capping a record-setting $10.8 billion year in moviegoing.

The Warner Bros. fantasy epic from director Peter Jackson, based on the beloved J.R.R. Tolkien novel, made nearly $33 million this weekend, according to Sunday studio estimates, despite serious competition from some much-anticipated newcomers. It's now made a whopping $686.7 million worldwide and $222.7 million domestically alone.

Two big holiday movies ? and potential Academy Awards contenders ? also had strong openings. Quentin Tarantino's spaghetti Western-blaxploitation mash-up "Django Unchained" came in second place for the weekend with $30.7 million. The Weinstein Co. revenge comedy, starring Jamie Foxx as a slave in the Civil War South and Christoph Waltz as the bounty hunter who frees him and then makes him his partner, has earned $64 million since its Christmas Day opening.

And in third place with $28 million was the sweeping, all-singing "Les Miserables," based on the international musical sensation and the Victor Hugo novel of strife and uprising in 19th century France. The Universal Pictures film, with a cast of A-list actors singing live on camera led by Hugh Jackman, Anne Hathaway and Russell Crowe has made $67.5 million domestically and $116.2 worldwide since debuting on Christmas.

Additionally, the smash-hit James Bond adventure "Skyfall" has now made $1 billion internationally to become the most successful film yet in the 50-year franchise, Sony Pictures announced Sunday. The film stars Daniel Craig for the third time as the iconic British superspy.

"This is a great final weekend of the year," said Paul Dergarabedian, an analyst for box-office tracker Hollywood.com. "How perfect to end this year on such a strong note with the top five films performing incredibly well."

The week's other new wide release, the Billy Crystal-Bette Midler comedy "Parental Guidance" from 20th Century Fox, made $14.8 million over the weekend for fourth place and $29.6 million total since opening on Christmas.

Dergarabedian described the holding power of "The Hobbit" in its third week as "just amazing." Jackson shot the film, the first of three prequels to his massively successful "Lord of the Rings" series, in 48 frames per second ? double the normal frame rate ? for a crisper, more detailed image. It's also available in the usual 24 frames per second and both 2-D and 3-D projections.

"I think people are catching up with the movie. Maybe they're seeing it in multiple formats," he said. "I think it's just a big epic that feels like a great way to end the moviegoing year. There's momentum there with this movie."

"Django Unchained" is just as much of an epic in its own stylishly violent way that's quintessentially Tarantino. Erik Lomis, The Weinstein Co.'s president of theatrical distribution, said the opening exceeded the studio's expectations.

"We're thrilled with it, clearly. We knew it was extremely competitive at Christmas, particularly when you look at the start 'Les Miz' got. We were sort of resigned to being behind them. The fact that we were able to overtake them over the weekend was just great," Lomis said. "Taking nothing away from their number, it's a tribute to the playability of 'Django.'"

"Les Miserables" went into its opening weekend with nearly $40 million in North American grosses, including $18.2 on Christmas Day. That's the second-best opening ever on the holiday following "Sherlock Holmes," which made $24.9 million on Christmas 2009. Tom Hooper, in a follow-up to his Oscar-winner "The King's Speech," directs an enormous, ambitious take on the beloved musical which has earned a CinemaScore of "A'' from audiences and "A-plus" from women.

Nikki Rocco, Universal's head of distribution, said the debut for "Les Miserables" also beat the studio's expectations.

"That $18.2 million Christmas Day opening ? people were shocked ... This is a musical!" she said. "Once people see it, they talk about how fabulous it is."

It all adds up to a record-setting year at the movies, beating the previous annual record of $10.6 billion set in 2009. Dergarabedian pointed out that the hits came scattered throughout the year, not just during the summer blockbuster season or prestige-picture time at the end. "Contraband," ''Safe House" and "The Vow" all performed well early on, but then when the big movies came, they were huge. "The Avengers" had the biggest opening ever with $207.4 million in May. The raunchy comedy "Ted" and comic-book behemoth "The Dark Knight Rises" both found enormous audiences. And Paul Thomas Anderson's challenging drama "The Master" shattered records in September when it opened on five screens in New York and Los Angeles with $736,311, for a staggering per-screen average of $147,262.

"We were able to get this record without scratching and clawing to a record," he said.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Hollywood.com. Where available, latest international numbers are also included. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.

The lifetime risks of cancer from medical radiation may be overemphasized relative to more immediate health risks, according to a new study published online in the journal Radiology.

Radiation exposure from computed tomography (CT) and other medical sources has drawn considerable media attention in recent years. Stories warning of the dangers often focus on the lifetime risk estimates of radiation-induced cancer from repeat examinations. This approach has limitations, said Pari V. Pandharipande, M.D., M.P.H., abdominal and genitourinary imaging specialist at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston, especially in regard to clinical decision making.

Physicians often order imaging exams to diagnose, treat or monitor life-threatening conditions. The immediate or near-term risk of death from the condition should be taken into account when weighing the benefits of an exam against a potential future risk of radiation-induced cancer from imaging.

"This must be considered when physicians make imaging decisions for their patients, because the timing of risks changes their relevance," Dr. Pandharipande said. "Risks incurred later in life are not the same as those faced in the present. If you had to choose between the chance of incurring a serious risk now or later in life, most people would choose the latter."

Dr. Pandharipande and colleagues recently used CT radiation dose data and mathematical models to better understand the risk-benefit dynamic of medical radiation. They projected outcomes for testicular cancer patients who undergo CT surveillance in the decade after orchiectomy, or removal of the testicle.

"Testicular cancer affects younger men, and patients treated for early-stage cancer receive several CT scans during surveillance," Dr. Pandharipande said. "These patients do very well, but they have a greater risk of radiation-induced cancer later in life."

Based on the results of their analysis, the researchers projected that 33-year-old men with early-stage cancer who undergo CT surveillance incur a slightly higher lifetime mortality risk from testicular cancer compared with potential radiation-induced cancers. Because the testicular cancer risk was more immediate, life expectancy loss attributable to testicular cancer was more than three times greater than life expectancy loss attributable to radiation-induced cancers.

The trends were consistent across all the scenarios studied, and put forth a useful concept to help physicians with decision making.

"Radiation-induced cancer risks, often discussed at the population level, can be challenging to conceptualize and apply to imaging decisions that have to be made at the patient level," Dr. Pandharipande said. "We as physicians can benefit from dedicated educational efforts to improve decision making and better convey the risks to patients."

Although the study focused on testicular cancer patients, concepts pertaining to the timing of radiation-induced cancer risk translate to other scenarios where CT is needed to avert a more immediate health risk, Dr. Pandharipande noted.

How The Africa Cup of Nations affects the Premier League and Football League - Group B review

Congo DR, Ghana, Mali and Niger are in Group B of the African Cup of Nations and their involvement has either directly or indirectly affected teams such as Bristol City, Arsenal, Leicester City, Birmingham City, West Ham, Fulham, Wolves, Crewe Alexandra, Brighton & HA, Peterbrough, Doncaster Rovers, Burton Albion and Watford.

Next year the African Nations Cup is once again in full flow as Zambia look to defend their title in South Africa. As always the competition will have an effect on global football as many stars players from the bigger leagues consider joining up with their countries in a bid to become kings of their home continent.

The Confederation of African Football has set the deadline for the submission of squads for January 9^th; with the full list of 23-players being named by midnight. Any late submissions will see a substantial fine and the loss of a player from the list.

Some teams have announced their preliminary squads or training camp teams early but this of course doesn?t cater for the English League system whose continued lack of a winter break means most of the English based players will not be available until shortly before the competition starts on the 19^th January.

But which Premier League and football league teams are going to win and lose from the Africa Cup of Nations?

Here is a country-by-country guide for Group B.

Ghana

The most likely loss will be Bristol City winger Albert Adomah who has been included in the original preliminary squad ahead of the January 9^th deadline. There is however a large pool of Ghanaian nationals playing in the UK and the some have recently been called up to action so could feature despite not being named in the preliminary squad if others succumb to injury. Arsenal youngsters Daniel Boateng and Emmanuel Frimpong were recent call-ups and Championship duo Jeff Schlupp and Akwasi Asante of Leicester City and Birmingham City respectively could also be unavailable for up to a month.

Mali

The Eagles were the national side who first ignited the debate on releasing players for the African Nations when they called up the previously uncapped Fredi Kanoute in 2004. This time around they will cause less of a fuss as West Ham United would have to have been well aware of Modibo Maiga?s intentions to travel with his country. QPR again could be hit if Samba Diakite decides to travel while Fulham midfielder Mahamadou Diarra, who has struggled with injury this season, is another maybe. Wolves are the only other team likely to lose a man in the form of Tongo Doumbia.

Niger

Another shock qualifier as they disposed of Guinea in the qualifying stages. None of the squad have links to the UK but their defeat of Guinea has prevented the National Elephants from tempting Mathias Pogba, brother of ex Manchester United prospect Paul Pogba into representation after a good season so far with Crewe Alexandra.

Democratic Republic of Congo

Their captain Lomana Lua-Lua is no longer with Blackpool but his brother Kazenga, as yet uncapped, could be called upon at the expense of Brighton and Hove Albion. There are plenty of other players from the football league who are likely to be called upon by manager Claude Le Roy including Gabriel Zakuani of Peterbrough and Herita Ilunga of Doncaster Rovers. Burton Albion midfielder Jacques Maghoma is also a likely addition while Britt Assombalonga of Watford cannot be discounted. Reported Arsenal target Dieumerci Mbokani of Anderlecht will also be on his way.

We need some new ideas, and would like to connect to other groups with a similar, focused agenda. We need a new WPA/CCC in this country, and we figured we might as well start here.

However, we have had very little interest, to be honest, which is surprising to us long term unemployed 3 people who've been trying to get some traction on this issue for a year now. Any suggestions, encouragement, evidence to indicate that we're full of shit and that such efforts are unnecessary , etc. would all be much appreciated.

The New Mexico Union of the Unemployed (NMUU) will organize and hold its first meetings in January of this year. So far, our primary agenda is to pressure elected officials to reapportion resources presently wasted on such boondoggles as the bloated Military Industrial Complex and devote the money saved to the creation of living wage jobs for the long term unemployed here in New Mexico. EU 'expects' Colombia will 'assuage' human rights concerns over military justice reform

The European Union said Satuday it expects Colombia to "assuage" concerns over impunity generated by a recently approved justice reform amplifying the jurisdiction of military tribunals.

In a press statement, the European High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Catherine Ashton, said she had "taken note of the adoption of the constitutional reform regarding the military jurisdiction in Colombia."

The reform amplified the Colombian military's jurisdiction over crimes allegedly committed by its own members. The reform was rejected by the United Nations and the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights who have claimed the reform will grant impunity to the military whose members are suspected of having committed at least 3,000 extrajudicial killings of civilians.

According to Ashton, "the EU had expressed a number of concerns on this sensitive issue. We have received reassurances that this reform will not lead to impunity for perpetrators of human rights violations, in line with Colombia's international commitments."

"The EU expects that remaining concerns will be assuaged by the forthcoming implementing legislation. The application of the new rules ? in particular with regard to the treatment of the pending investigations of alleged extrajudicial executions by state agents ? will be crucial to demonstrate that the worries expressed so far are unfounded," the E.U.'s top foreign affairs affairs said.

A hotel at The Meadows, a casino in Fayette County and new games are on tap for Western Pennsylvania gamblers in 2013.

Regulators will award the license for the state?s 13th casino, as gambling industry leaders hope Americans have enough confidence in the economy to keep the slots spinning and the cards turning.

?We?re a discretionary income business,? Rivers General Manager Craig Clark says of casinos in general. ?We?re one of the first to be cut? when people have to reduce their spending.

In the first 11 months of the year, Pennsylvania casinos generated $2.9 billion in gambling revenue, an increase of 4.7 percent from the total through November 2011. With an eye toward increasing that figure again in 2013, casino executives plan new offerings to attract new players and keep familiar faces returning.

Lady Luck Casino Nemacolin will open in the summer at the Fayette County resort, says Isle of Capri spokeswoman Jill Alexander. Isle of Capri, which operates 15 casinos in six other states, will manage Lady Luck.

It will have 600 slot machines and 28 table games but no poker room, Alexander says. The casino will have 450 employees.

Lady Luck Nemacolin will be a resort casino, meaning it will be open only to hotel guests and to people making a $10 purchase, such as food, a souvenir or a gift card. Managers of existing Western Pennsylvania casinos say they don?t worry about competition specifically from Lady Luck.

?Nemacolin will have some minor effect, but I don?t think it will be dramatic,? says Sean Sullivan, vice president and general manager at The Meadows Racetrack and Casino in North Strabane. ?It?ll be attractive to certain types of players.?

Clark sees Nemacolin as more of a destination location, while most Rivers customers come from Allegheny County.

The Meadows

Officials are ?working tirelessly? on a hotel that will be connected to the casino, Sullivan says. He expects groundbreaking in the spring.

The hotel will have about 200 rooms. Although about 1,000 rooms are available in nearby hotels, Clark says an on-site facility is a ?critical component? for casino guests. ?Meadows Hotel? will be built below the south parking garage, in an area now used for bus parking.

Work also is to start in the spring for a retail development tentatively called ?The Street.? It will front on Racetrack Road and include shops, restaurants and a bank. Tenants might be announced next month.

Rivers

The casino recently remodeled its poker room and installed a new high-limit room.

Clark says Rivers? focus in 2013 will be on slot machines and promotions. The casino plans to add new slots and get new titles out faster. He says promotions will be bigger and more exclusive. The $300,000 ?mortgage mania? promotion in January offers to cover the winner?s mortgage payments for a year, up to $18,000, with secondary prizes of making car and credit card payments.

The casino will continue its emphasis on community involvement, he says. It will again be a partner with the Auto Show and plan a NASCAR event that will put winners in a NASCAR simulator.

?Our business is based in Pittsburgh and Allegheny County. We?re supported by the local community in a very significant way,? he says.

Statewide

A major decision for the Gaming Control Board will be awarding the license for a second casino in Philadelphia. Six companies are vying for the state?s last Category 2 license, which allows a stand-alone casino with up to 5,000 slot machines and 250 table games.

Although Pennsylvania appears to have replaced New Jersey as the No. 2 gambling states, it faces competition from expansion in New York, Massachusetts, Maryland and elsewhere.

The state Gaming Control Board will see that the approval process for new games is quick and efficient, a spokesman says. The board also notes that several casinos are adding entertainment and conference venues, hotels and additional restaurants.

Nationwide

Online gambling will remain the No. 1 topic. Supporters of federal legislation authorizing legal online poker pulled the plug on their proposal in mid-December, while pledging to try again in 2013.

A 2011 U.S. Department of Justice ruling says states may offer online games within their borders. Nevada has authorized operators of online poker site that are expected to begin operations this year, and Delaware seems poised to offer online slots as well as poker, roulette, blackjack and other games.

Last week, New Jersey?s Legislature approved allowing online versions of any game offered in Atlantic City casinos. The bill was sent to Gov. Chris Christie.

California and other states are exploring legalization of online gambling.

HTC HD2 runs Windows RT, postpones trip to afterlife yet again

HTC's HD2 may have begun life as just another Windows Mobile 6.5 handset, but its surprisingly hardy internals enable it to run almost any mobile OS going. The latest software to appear on the three-year-old device is Windows RT, which was jammed onto the system by a developer called Cotulla -- who previously put Windows Phone 7 on the same unit. While we imagine it's not that comfortable to use on the HD2's 4.3-inch screen, we can imagine some superheroes are now scouring eBay for a similarly immortal smartphone.

What can we learn from bowling about incentives, disincentives and ...

Under the scoring rules of bowling, you get rewarded, not penalized, for being a successful bowler. ?When a player clears all ten pins using both balls in a frame and gets a ?spare,? the bowler is awarded ten points for that frame, plus a bonus based on the number of pins knocked down with the first ball of the next frame.? When a bowler clears all ten pins with the first ball in a frame, the player is awarded ten points, plus a bonus based on the number of pins knocked down with the next two balls.? With this bonus method of scoring, the points scored for the ball (or two balls) following a spare (strike) are counted twice, and there is a reward for being successful at knocking as many pins down with the least number of balls. ?A perfect score of 300 points for twelve consecutive strikes actually includes 200 ?bonus points,? in addition to the 100 points for the actual number of pins knocked down in ten frames.

Under our current progressive federal income tax system with six tax rates increasing from 10% (for income up to $8,700 for single filers) to 35% (for income above $388,351 for single filers), Americans get penalized, not rewarded, for being successful and entrepreneurial.? Reason? ?The more income you earn and report to the IRS, the higher the tax rate you pay. ?At the highest current marginal tax rate of 35%, more than one-third of the marginal income of high income earners gets taxed at the federal level, in addition to income taxes paid at the state level, which can be as high as 11% in Oregon and Hawaii, and 10.55% in California. ?Importantly, a progressive income tax system creates strong disincentives to be productive, because the most successful individuals get taxed (and penalized) at higher marginal rates as they earn more income, at combined federal and state tax rates that could approach almost 50 percent of the last dollar earned.

What if we scored bowling the way we tax income?? Then we would subtract, not add points for a spare or strike, i.e. we would penalize and ?tax? the best bowlers with disincentives for being successful.?? With penalties for being successful, we would expect fewer bowlers striving for excellence and a general deterioration in the quality of the sport.

What if we taxed income the way we score bowling?? We would then reward the most productive Americans by reducing their tax rates as their earnings increased, not increasing their tax burden as they become more successful.? That is, we would do away with the progressive tax system of increasing disincentives for earning income, and we would implement a regressive income tax system that rewards successful income-generating activities the way bowling success is rewarded. ?Or alternatively, we would at least consider a flat tax system to avoid the disincentive effects of increasing marginal tax rates.

As Steve Moore pointed out in the Wall Street Journal recently, ?If we want millionaires to pay more taxes, then we need an economy where there are more millionaires.?? And we could create a lot more millionaires under a less progressive tax system with lower top marginal rates than with the more progressive system with higher marginal tax rates that might soon become reality.

Bottom Line: Incentives matter.? And just as importantly, so do disincentives. ?When we think about income taxes, maybe we can learn something about the importance of incentives and disincentives from the scoring rules of bowling.

Strange behavior: New study exposes living cells to synthetic protein

Dec. 27, 2012 ? One approach to understanding components in living organisms is to attempt to create them artificially, using principles of chemistry, engineering and genetics. A suite of powerful techniques -- collectively referred to as synthetic biology -- have been used to produce self-replicating molecules, artificial pathways in living systems and organisms bearing synthetic genomes.

In a new twist, John Chaput, a researcher at Arizona State University's Biodesign Institute and colleagues at the Department of Pharmacology, Midwestern University, Glendale, AZ have fabricated an artificial protein in the laboratory and examined the surprising ways living cells respond to it.

"If you take a protein that was created in a test tube and put it inside a cell, does it still function," Chaput asks. "Does the cell recognize it? Does the cell just chew it up and spit it out?" This unexplored area represents a new domain for synthetic biology and may ultimately lead to the development of novel therapeutic agents.

The research results, reported in the advanced online edition of the journal ACS Chemical Biology, describe a peculiar set of adaptations exhibited by Escherichia coli bacterial cells exposed to a synthetic protein, dubbed DX. Inside the cell, DX proteins bind with molecules of ATP, the energy source required by all biological entities.

"ATP is the energy currency of life," Chaput says. The phosphodiester bonds of ATP contain the energy necessary to drive reactions in living systems, giving up their stored energy when these bonds are chemically cleaved. The depletion of available intracellular ATP by DX binding disrupts normal metabolic activity in the cells, preventing them from dividing, (though they continue to grow).

After exposure to DX, the normally spherical E. coli bacteria develop into elongated filaments. Within the filamentous bacteria, dense intracellular lipid structures act to partition the cell at regular intervals along its length. These unusual structures, which the authors call endoliposomes, are an unprecedented phenomenon in such cells.

"Somewhere along the line of this filamentation, other processes begin to happen that we haven't fully understood at the genetic level, but we can see the results phenotypically," Chaput says. "These dense lipid structures are forming at very regular regions along the filamented cell and it looks like it could be a defense mechanism, allowing the cell to compartmentalize itself." This peculiar adaptation has never been observed in bacterial cells and appears unique for a single-celled organism.

Producing a synthetic protein like DX, which can mimic the elaborate folding characteristics of naturally occurring proteins and bind with a key metabolite like ATP is no easy task. As Chaput explains, a clever strategy known as mRNA display was used to produce, fine-tune and amplify synthetic proteins capable of binding ATP with high affinity and specificity, much as a naturally occurring ATP-binding protein would.

First, large libraries of random sequence peptides are formed from the four nucleic acids making up DNA, with each strand measuring around 80 nucleotides in length. These sequences are then transcribed into RNA with the help of an enzyme -- RNA polymerase. If a natural ribosome is then introduced, it attaches to the strand and reads the random sequence RNA as though it was a naturally-occurring RNA, generating a synthetic protein as it migrates along the strand. In this way, synthetic proteins based on random RNA sequences can be generated.

Exposing the batch of synthetic proteins to the target molecule and extracting those that bind can then select for ATP-binding proteins. But as Chaput explains, there's a problem: "The big question is how do you recover that genetic information? You can't reverse transcribe a protein back into DNA. You can't PCR amplify a protein. So we have to do all these molecular biology tricks."

The main trick involves an earlier step in the process. A molecular linker is chemically attached to the RNA templates, such that each RNA strand forms a bond with its newly translated protein. The mRNA-protein hybrids are exposed to selection targets (like ATP) over consecutive rounds of increasing stringency. After each round of selection, those library members that remain bound to the target are reverse-transcribed into cDNA (using their conveniently attached RNA messages), and then PCR amplified.

In the current study, E. coli cells exposed to DX transitioned into a filamentous form, which can occur naturally when such cells are subject to conditions of stress. The cells display low metabolic activity and limited cell division, presumably owing to their ATP-starved condition.

The study also examined the ability of E. coli to recover following DX exposure. The cells were found to enter a quiescent state known as viable but non-culturable (VBNC), meaning that they survived ATP sequestration and returned to their non-filamentous state after 48 hours, but lost their reproductive capacity. Further, this condition was difficult to reverse and seems to involve a fundamental reprogramming of the cell.

In an additional response to DX, the filamentous cells form previously undocumented structures, which the authors refer to as endoliposomes. These dense lipid concentrations, spanning the full width of the filamented E. coli, segment the cells into distinct compartments, giving the cells a stringbean-like appearance under the microscope.

The authors speculate that this adaptation may be an effort to maintain homeostasis in regions of the filamentous cell, which have essentially been walled off from the intrusion of ATP-depleting DX. They liken endoliposomes to the series of water-tight compartments found in submarines which are used to isolate damaged sections of the ship and speculate that DX-exposed cells are partitioning their genetic information into regions where it can be safely quarantined. Such self-compartmentalization is known to occur in some eukaryotic cells, but has not been previously observed in prokaryotes like E. coli.

The research indicates that there is still a great deal to learn about bacterial behavior and the repertoire of responses available when such cells encounter novel situations, such as an unfamiliar, synthetic protein. The study also notes that many infectious agents rely on a dormant state, (similar to the VBNC condition observed in the DX-exposed E. coli), to elude detection by antibiotics. A better understanding of the mechanisms driving this behavior could provide a new approach to targeting such pathogens.

The relative safety of E. coli as a model organism for study may provide a fruitful tool for more in-depth investigation of VBNC states in pathogenic organisms. Further, given ATP's central importance for living organisms, its suppression may provide another avenue for combating disease. One example would be an engineered bacteriophage capable of delivering DX genes to pathogenic organisms.

Some of us have been feeding advice to DARPA's ACTUV sub-tracking drone project for more than a year, but we haven't had a in-depth look at how the autonomous ship will go about its business, especially when chasing very silent diesel-electric subs. Thankfully, craft designer SAIC has stepped in with a detailed video tour. If there's suspicions that a diesel sub is in the area, the US Navy can deploy sonar buoys that give the ACTUV an inkling of where to go first. After that, the drone takes over with both long-range and short-range sonar. The vehicle can gauge the intent of ships in its path (with human failsafes) and hound a target for up to 13 weeks -- either letting the Navy close in for an attack or, ideally, spooking the sub into avoiding conflict in the first place. While ACTUV won't hit the waves for years, there's a promise that we'll always know about underwater threats and deal with them on our own terms.

1. Bring Up the Bodies
by Hilary Mantel?(Holt, $28)
In Hilary Mantel's hands, Thomas Cromwell has become "one of literature's most compelling characters," said?Radhika?Jones?in?Time. Henry VIII's chief adviser was both "loyal and scheming, generous and cruel" ? traits Mantel brought to the fore in 2009's?Wolf Hall,?the first installment of her Cromwell trilogy. In the second, she "deepens her portrait of the master puppeteer." Mantel's "exhilarating prose, unrivaled in contemporary fiction," puts us whisper-close to Cromwell as he maneuvers Anne Boleyn toward the executioner's block while inescapably sowing the seeds of his own eventual demise. Mantel obviously understands that "what gives fiction its vitality is not the accurate detail but the animate one," said?James Wood?in?The New Yorker. "Quite a few readers would be prepared to yawn" at an encounter between Cromwell and theologian Thomas?Cranmer, but Mantel makes such scenes "alive, silvery," and "rapid with insight."
A caveat:?This book feels too much like a bridge to the next installment, a "highly entertaining throat-clearing," said?William?Georgiades?at?Slate.

2.?Billy Lynn's Long Halftime?Walk
by Ben Fountain?(Ecco, $15)
The Iraq War era has found its?Catch-22, said?Jeff?Turrentine?in?The Washington Post.?Ben Fountain's "masterful gut-punch of a debut novel" unfolds on a recent Thanksgiving Day as the surviving members of a combat unit, fresh from battlefield heroics celebrated endlessly by Fox News, are feted during the megawatt halftime show of the holiday's Dallas Cowboys game. With "hardly a false note," Fountain records the spectacle through the 19-year-old eyes of Billy Lynn, who's just hours away from redeployment and trying to hold his emotions in check as he soldiers his way into the belly of the beast of American excess. Fountain's novel "left me breathless," said?Jonathan?Evison?at?NPR. This brilliant satire is also remarkably visceral. "From the sodium glare of the stadium lights to the acid sting of bitterness in the throat," you "feel the story with your whole body."?
A caveat:?Billy Lynn?is "95 percent the most entertaining novel I've read in ages," said?Adam Langer?in the?San Francisco Chronicle. But the ending feels forced.?

When in doubt, return to your roots, said?K. Thomas Kahn?at?TheMillions.com. Zadie Smith's fourth novel circles back to Willesden, the northwest London neighborhood of her youth and the setting of her stunning 2000 debut,?White Teeth. But?NW?is a "more poetic and abstract novel," with stream-of-consciousness sections that owe a debt to Virginia Woolf's?Mrs.?Dalloway. Leah and Natalie, the dual protagonists, grew up together in a neighborhood housing project, and both have made it out. But each friend is struggling, amid the claims that race, class, and gender make on her, to find and embrace a comfortable identity. This is a "deeply ambitious" novel, said?David L. Ulin?in the?Los Angeles Times.?But it's also "exuberant, lush with language," and "intensely readable, intensely human": It signals the maturation of a writer already wise beyond her years.?
A caveat:?"The people in this book are more stereotypes than individuals, more ham-handed cartoons than emotionally detailed human beings," said?Michiko Kakutani?in?The New York Times.?

4.?Gone Girl
by Gillian Flynn?(Crown, $25)
"A great crime novel is an unstable thing, entertainment and literature suspended in some undetermined solution," said?Laura Miller?at?Salon. Gillian Flynn's "ingenious, pitch-black" third novel mixes the ingredients to perfection. Nick and Amy lead charmed lives in New York City until a turn of the economy demotes them to a McMansion in the Missouri town where Nick grew up. Then Amy disappears, leaving a trace of blood, and all signs point to Nick. From then on, readers ache to solve "two mysteries ? what happened to Amy, and what happened to Nick-and-Amy?" Neither puzzle is easily solved, said?Janet Maslin?in?The New York Times. "Both Nick and Amy are extremely adept liars, and they lied to each other a lot." They lie to you, too ? Nick in the present tense and Amy in diary entries. All along, Flynn displays "ice-pick sharp" control, with "characters so well-imagined they're hard to part with ? even if, as in Amy's case, they are already departed."?
A caveat:?Flynn's characters are "slightly cartoonish, and more than once, their over-the-top scheming strains credulity," said?Amy Gutman?in the?Chicago Tribune.?

5.?Building Stories
by Chris Ware?(Pantheon, $50)
This remarkable work of fiction is less a book than a "keepsake box full of things you don't want to forget," said?Melissa Maerz?in?Entertainment Weekly. Each board-game-size box contains 14 odd-shaped bits of "beautifully illustrated" literature, from a flip book to a poster to an ersatz children's reader. The whole package is the work of graphic novelist Chris Ware, and there's no right way in. Picking things up at random, you find your way into an affecting story about the lonely lives of four inhabitants of one Chicago brownstone. My initial irritation at having to piece Ware's story together "gave way to enchantment," said?Steve Almond?in?The New Republic. A "poet of solitude," Ware has used the comic-book format as a tool of psychological investigation ? conveying the scope of his characters' "private torments" and "unfulfilled lives" in a few well-wrought panels.?Building Stories?might be too bleak for some readers, but it's "brutal in the way all great art is." In fact, it's "one of the most important pieces of art I have ever experienced."
A caveat:?You can't read?Building Stories?on a Kindle, said?Douglas Wolk?in?The New York Times.?

Take an IRA Distribution Before Fiscal Cliff ? Wise Money Israel

Many Americans, and investors around the world, are watching anxiously this week to see what the U.S. Congress will do (or not do) to save the U.S. economy and taxpayers from the ?fiscal cliff?. If new legislation is not enacted by December 31, 2012, taxes for all Americans will automatically increase. The Congressional Budget Office has already estimated that this will lead to another recession in 2013.

That would mean a 20 percent capital gains rate, and a dividend rate at income tax levels, which could revert to the Clinton-era 39.6 percent for the highest earners. The Affordable Care Act in 2013 adds 3.8 percent to those rates for the wealthiest Americans.

As you may know, your U.S. retirement account (IRA, 401k, etc.) can fund an Israeli investment account and keep the funds tax-deferred. But sometimes, it is wiser to take out your funds and pay the taxes now, while the tax rates are relatively low, instead of waiting until next year when the tax rates may be higher. If you?ve considered opening an Israeli investment account in the past, you may be able to save tens of thousands of shekels by taking a lump distribution from your IRA in 2012 before tax rates go up. For example, if your IRA had $100,000 of dividends and $100,000 of capital gains, the tax you could pay in 2013 would be up to $33,400 more than if you paid the tax in 2012. That is 125,000 more shekels with which to invest in Israel if you act quickly. The Israeli investment account itself can be funded in 2013.

What can be done to prevent automatic tax increases on your retirement account (IRA, 401k, etc.) from going into effect for you? Consider calling your retirement fund administrator or downloading their simple form for withdrawing your funds in 2012 before the Bush tax cuts expire on December 31, 2012.

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? An Afghan official says the policewoman who killed an American contractor in Kabul is an Iranian who came to Afghanistan 10 years ago with her husband and obtained a fake ID through him.

Interior Ministry spokesman Sediq Sediqi said Tuesday she had displayed "unstable behavior" but that the investigation revealed no militants links so far.

On Monday, the policewoman identified as Sgt. Nargas shot 49-year-old Joseph Griffin, of Mansfield, Georgia, in what was the first such shooting by a woman in a spate of insider attacks by Afghans against their foreign allies.

The U.S-based security firm DynCorp International says on its web site that Griffin was a U.S. military veteran who had earlier worked with law-enforcement agencies in the United States. In Kabul, he was advising the Afghan police force.

7 Barrington Groups Among CVS Caremark Charity Classic ...

Seventy-seven area nonprofit organizations -- including seven Barrington organizations -- got a welcome holiday boost last week as they received funds generated from the CVS Caremark Charity Classic in Barrington.

The tournament, Rhode Island?s largest charitable sporting event, raised $1.2 million this year for charities across Southern New England, bringing the total funds raised since its inception to more than $16 million.

The Barrington organizations receiving funds:

• Barrington Land Conservation Trust
• Barrington Public Library
• Barrington Senior Center
• Bayside YMCA

Present to award the funds raised by this year?s tournament ? which draws some of the world?s best PGA and LPGA golfers to Barrington each summer ? were CVS Caremark President and CEO Larry Merlo and PGA tour professionals/CVS Caremark Charity Classic co-hosts Billy Andrade of Bristol and Brad Faxon of Barrington.

The trio distributed the funds amid a holiday atmosphere, and inspirational stories were shared by a student and the Head of School for Our Sisters? School ? one of the nonprofit recipients of the funds ? located in New Bedford, Mass.

?The appeal of the CVS Caremark Charity Classic is two-fold,? said Merlo. ?First, the tournament provides world-class entertainment for avid golf fans. In addition, the tournament has a deep commitment of providing much-needed financial support to a range of organizations that make a real difference in the lives of so many. Anyone with constantly swollen, itchy, red and irritated earlobes could be allergic to nickel, and the solution may be as simple as allergy free earrings.

Nickel is a natural white metal that is often mixed with gold to create a less-expensive alloy. It is used in jewelry, such as earring posts, and in many other common items. Metal allergies are a type of skin reaction called contact dermatitis. Dermatologists are seeing more and more cases of metal allergies as body piercings have become more common. After poison ivy, metal allergies are the most common cause of contact dermatitis.

Most people won't have a problem the first time they wear earrings with nickel posts, but repeated exposure may provoke a reaction. Some individuals, however, are highly sensitive to nickel and will have an allergic reaction after just brief contact. An allergy sufferer may not realize which pair of earrings is causing the discomfort since it often takes a few days for the reaction to show up.

People of any age can suddenly get nickel allergies. Symptoms include swelling, itching and redness. In severe cases, blisters may form and eventually break, leaving ugly painful crusts on the earlobes. The skin can become leathery, cracked and dark. A doctor should be consulted if this happens; there is a risk of infection. Usually the reaction is confined to the earlobe, but some people are so sensitive that they can spread the reaction to another part of their body simply by touching it with fingers that touched the nickel. Sweating can make the allergy worse since moisture can provoke an electrochemical reaction between the metals in an alloy.

People who suspect they have a nickel allergy should consult a skin doctor, called a dermatologist. The dermatologist can confirm the allergy by performing a painless skin patch test. The doctor will apply several allergens to a small patch of skin on the back, using hypoallergenic tape. The patient must leave the tape in place for about two days, then return to the dermatologist. The doctor will remove the tape and check for a reaction. If the area is irritated, then the person is allergic to the substance the doctor applied there. There's no cure for a nickel allergy, but there are some things that will ease the pain. The dermatologist may prescribe a corticosteroid cream to be applied on the affected area to ease the itching and swelling.

Of course, the best route is to avoid exposure to nickel. Earrings with 14-carat gold, sterling silver or stainless steel posts are available. There are also plastic sheaths that cover the nickel alloy posts on earrings, as well as earrings with plastic posts. Earrings with titanium posts are another option. Avoid nickel in other objects, too. Some people have allergic reactions to the nickel in snaps and zippers on their clothing. Others have trouble with metal eyeglasses and sunglasses frames. People who are very sensitive should avoid eating foods that are rich in nickel, such as chocolate, grains and nuts.
