SAINT JOHN, NEW BRUSNWICK (April 16, 2013) ? Saint Francis U men's basketball alum Devin Sweetney was named the National Basketball League of Canada's Most Valuable Player at the Second Annual NBL Canada Awards at the All-Star Breakfast on April 14.The 6'6 swingman helped the Moncton Miracles to a 23-24 record and aided his team to the second round of the NBL tournament before falling to the eventual champion London Lightning.? Averaging 24.9 points per game, Sweetney racked up 1,173 points to become the NBL Canada's Scoring Champion.
Sweetney was selected as starter for Atlantic Division All Star Team and capitalized on his time in the spotlight, netting a team-high-tying 28 points.
Founded in 2011, the eight-team NBL Canada is Canada's only professional basketball league.
Sweetney played for the Red Flash from 2006 to 2010 and currently ranks as the no. 7 scorer in SFU history with 1,529 points.? A 2007 Northeast Conference All-Rookie Team selection, Sweetney earned All-NEC First Team honors in 2010 before being selected in the fourth round of the NBA Developmental League by the Tulsa 66ers (Oklahoma City Thunder).
