Ex-Murdoch editor Brooks due in court on hacking plot charges

LONDON (Reuters) - Rebekah Brooks, a former executive in Rupert Murdoch's media empire and friend of Prime Minister David Cameron, faces charges in court on Wednesday that she conspired to hide evidence from police investigating a phone hacking scandal.

The charges are part of the criminal inquiry into assertions that UK newspapers intercepted messages on the phones of celebrities, politicians and crime victims, and made illegal payments to public officials.

The scandal has damaged the reputation of Murdoch's global media operations, raised questions about Cameron's judgment and exposed the close relations between British politicians, police and journalists.

Brooks, 44, was expected to enter a plea on three counts of conspiracy to pervert the course of justice between July 6 and July 19, 2011. The hearing will take place at the Central Criminal Court in London.

The Crown Prosecution Service said the first charge alleges she conspired with her husband Charlie Brooks, a racehorse trainer, to "conceal material from the officers of the Metropolitan Police Service" in London.

The second accuses Brooks and Cheryl Carter, her one-time personal assistant, of plotting "to remove seven boxes of material from the archive of News International", Murdoch's UK newspaper business.

The third alleges that Brooks, her husband and three others conspired "to conceal documents, computers and other electronic equipment from officers".

Cameron's ex-media chief Andy Coulson, who also worked as a Murdoch newspaper editor, is due in the same court for a preliminary hearing on charges that he conspired to intercept phone messages.

Brooks is separately charged with conspiracy to intercept phone messages, allegations she has denied. Wednesday's hearing will encompass both the charges of conspiracy to pervert the course of justice and those related to phone messages.

Brooks was one of Murdoch's most trusted and loyal managers, editing two of his top-selling tabloid newspapers before going on to run News International. She was also close to Cameron, exchanging text messages with the Conservative leader.

Greek strike to test coalition government's mettle

ATHENS (Reuters) - Greek workers on Wednesday hold their first major anti-austerity strike since a coalition government took power in June, grounding flights, disrupting local transport and shutting public service offices.

Called by the country's two biggest unions that represent half the work force, the walkout is expected to bring out thousands of Greeks to the streets to protest at a new round of belt-tightening demanded by EU and IMF lenders.

"We call on everyone to take part in the strike and resist the austerity measures that hurt Greek people and the economy," said unionist Despoina Spanou of the ADEDY labor group.

"This strike is only the beginning in our fight."

The traditional summer break has allowed the conservative-led government of Prime Minister Antonis Samaras to enjoy relative calm on the streets since coming to power.

But ADEDY and its private sector counterpart GSEE were predicting a big turnout on Wednesday to end the seasonal lull.

About 3,000 police - twice the number usually deployed - will stand guard in the center of Athens as authorities brace for the rioting that has marked past rallies. Athens last witnessed serious violence in February, when protesters set shops and banks ablaze as parliament approved an austerity bill.

Ships will stay docked, shops will pull down shutters and museums and monuments will be closed to visitors throughout the day on Wednesday. Air traffic controllers will walk off the job for three hours and hospitals will operate on emergency staff.

Much of the union anger is directed at spending cuts worth nearly 12 billion euros ($15.55 billion) over the next two years that Greece has promised the European Union and International Monetary Fund in an effort to unlock its next tranche of aid.

The bulk of those cuts are expected from slashing wages, pensions and welfare benefits, heaping a new wave of misery on Greeks who say repeated rounds of austerity have pushed them to the brink and failed to transform the country for the better.

A survey by the MRB polling agency last week showed that more than 90 percent of Greeks believe the planned cuts are unfair and burden the poor, with the vast majority expecting more austerity in coming years.

But with Greece facing certain bankruptcy and a potential euro zone exit without further aid, Samaras's government has little choice but to push through the unpopular measures, which have also exposed fissures in his fragile coalition.

With Greece in its fifth year of recession and no light at the end of the austerity tunnel, analysts warn that Greek patience is wearing thin and a strong public backlash could tear apart the weak conservative-led coalition.

"What people want to tell Samaras is that they are hurt and Samaras could use this to demand concessions from the troika," said MRB polling director Dimitris Mavros.

"The people are willing to give the government time, but on certain conditions like cracking down on tax evasion and securing a bailout extension. If the government succeeds in that, its life will also be extended." ($1 = 0.7715 euros) (Additional reporting by Tatiana Fragou; Editing by Deepa Babington and Mark Heinrich)

Mom furious male vice principal spanked her daughter

By NBC News satff

A Texas mother is furious that male vice principal left her daughter bruised and blistered after a spanking, which the girl opted for over another day of in-school suspension for cheating in class.

Taylor Santos, a sophomore at Springtown High School, northwest of Fort Worth, Texas, told school officials?that she didn?t know another student had copied her classwork, but school officials gave both girls two days of in-school suspension as punishment.

After serving one day, Taylor said she didn?t want to miss any more classes, so she went to the vice principal?s office and opted instead for a paddling ? a legal form of punishment in schools in Texas and 19 other states,?according to the?Center for Effective Discipline.?

Because school policy says spanking or paddling requires that parents give permission, the vice principal had Taylor call her mother, Anna Jorgensen, who gave her approval.

"I knew school policy was females swatted females and males swatted males,? Jorgensen told WFAA-TV in Dallas-Fort Worth.??If Taylor wanted that, I said that would be fine.?

But what happened instead was the vice principal himself swatted Taylor while a woman was present in the room, despite school policy that states ?corporal punishment shall be administered only by an employee who is the same sex as the student."?

After learning who did the spanking and seeing the wounds on her daughter's body, Jorgensen said she was horrified.

"I came unglued," Jorgensen said. ?It looked almost like it had been burned and blistered, it was so bad,? she said of her daughter?s bottom, adding that she took photos of injuries to prove how red they were.

Jorgensen called the vice principal to complain, but he told her it was perfectly normal for her daughter?s bottom to look like that. He reportedly added that he wasn?t aware of the school?s same-sex swatting policy.

Springtown Superintendent Mike Kelley told WFAA that school officials never administer corporal punishment unless a parent requests it. While he declined to speak on Taylor?s case specifically, he stressed that two adults are always present when corporal punishment is administered, but he said the school district may have made an error.

Kelly also said he wants to do away with the current policy because the male-to-female ratio of administrators at the school makes it a difficult policy to adhere to. He said he will ask the school board to get rid of the same gender requirement at a board meeting Monday.?

For her part, Jorgensen said she will be in attendance at that meeting to urge the school board to keep the gender-based policy.

"I think Taylor is proof that we need to keep that policy," Jorgensen said. "I don't believe a man intentionally meant to do that to her, but it still happens, because men are too big and strong to be hitting 96-pound girls."

More than 220,000 school children nationwide were subjected to physical punishment during the 2005-2006 school year, according to the Center for Effective Discipline, citing the most recent figures available.

At one school in Florida,?the woodshop class at?Holmes County High School?actually makes the paddles used to spank any of the more than 500 students.?

In another Florida town, east of Tallahassee, townfolkd make paddles out of plexiglass for?Madison?County Central's elementary and middle school, the dean of schools said.

(AP) ? Manmohan Singh's coalition has splintered and his government is fighting for survival. But the Indian prime minister, who has been criticized for presiding meekly over a corrupt government, is suddenly being hailed as a bold, powerful leader.

Since pushing through a battery of unexpected economic reforms last week, and refusing to back down in the face of protests and political threats, Singh appeared to have rejuvenated a government thought hopelessly paralyzed.

"We have been faulted in the last few months of not being adequately a doing government. Now the time has come that we are doing something, and we hope that everybody who cares for this country and the new generation will join in," Law Minister Salman Khurshid said Friday.

A day after a national strike by opponents of his economic program, Singh got a political breather Friday when a regional party opposed to the reforms said it would continue to support the government from outside the coalition. Singh prepared to address the country Friday night to explain his actions.

The turnaround for the soft spoken 79-year-old economist has been shocking.

"He made up his mind that he's going to push through his economic reforms agenda, even if it means he was going to lose power," said Dileep Padgaonkar, a veteran journalist and political analyst.

Padgaonkar said Singh was looking to rescue his legacy and reclaim the glow of his most famous achievement two decades ago when as finance minister he led wholesale reforms widely credited with sparking India's economic rise.

In the past few years, his government was battered by scandals, including the irregular sales of cellphone spectrum and coal blocks that India's auditor said cost the country billions. The opposition protested by paralyzing Parliament, making it impossible for the government to pass many bills. Bureaucrats, fearing they would get caught up in the next scandal, stopped making decisions, freezing business.

The Trinamool Congress, an important coalition partner, regularly blocked decisions. Its leader, Mamata Banerjee, torpedoed an about-to-be-signed water treaty with Bangladesh and fired the national railway minister, who was from her party, when he presented a budget including the first fare increases in nearly a decade.

A low point came last year when the government decided to allow foreign retail chains to come into the country ? and then suspended the decision two weeks later after Banerjee protested.

Meanwhile, India's economy, which officials had recently hoped would hit double-digit growth, was sputtering. The rupee had plunged in value and the country's huge deficit was putting it under threat of a possible ratings downgrade.

Last week, Singh's government responded. It cut the subsidy on diesel fuel by 5 rupees (10 cents) a liter and placed limits on cooking gas subsidies. It agreed to let in foreign retailers, loosened rules on foreign investment in airlines and TV and agreed to sell off stakes in four state owned companies.

The Indian Express newspaper said in an editorial the reforms were not likely to have much immediate impact, but "they are a crucial statement of intent."

The moves sparked outrage from opponents who fear Indian jobs will be lost if large U.S. and European retailers enter the market.

"(Singh) is out to destroy the interests of small traders and farmers," said Sitaram Yechuri, a lawmaker from the communist party.

Jai Prakash, a student at a protest rally in New Delhi, said the economic package showed "politicians are not bothered about the welfare of millions of poor people."

Banerjee demanded an immediate rollback or she would pull out of the coalition. The government ignored the threat, setting the decisions into law Thursday.

Singh's new reforms have been compared with his support for a U.S.-Indian nuclear deal that ended the country's nuclear isolation but nearly brought down his government near the end of his first term in 2008.

That doesn't look likely, at least for now. Though Singh will preside over a minority government without Trinamool, he maintains the support of two parties outside the coalition.

And it is likely that without the mercurial Banerjee the government might go further, possibly opening up the insurance sector to more outside investment and reducing sugar subsidies for the poor. At the same time, the government has sought to lighten the burden on the poor with a tax cut for cooking gas, and media reports said it planned to release 10 million tons of stored grain into the market to bring down food prices.

Zoya Hasan, a political analyst with New Delhi's Jawarhalal Nehru University, said she might not agree with what Singh has done, but he has made himself into India's most influential prime minister since its founding leader, Nehru.

"(He) has brought about a huge change," she said.

Man jumps into tiger pit at New York's Bronx Zoo, gets mauled

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A tiger critically injured a man who jumped into the big cat's den at New York City's Bronx Zoo on Friday, retreating only after emergency workers scared it off with a fire extinguisher.

The man, 25, was riding the zoo's monorail in the afternoon and leapt from a car, clearing a fence around the tiger enclosure, according to a statement from the zoo.

He has been taken to a local hospital and is in critical condition, the New York City fire department said.

"It looks like he had some very severe wounds on his back or his torso," said Frank Dwyer, a fire department spokesman. He said he did not know whether the wounds were caused by teeth or claws.

"One leg was severely injured," he said, although he could not confirm early reports that the man lost a foot in the incident.

In rescuing the man, the zoo's emergency workers used a fire extinguisher to repel the tiger, then ordered the man to roll under a hot wire to safety.

"If not for the quick response by our staff and their ability to perform well in emergency situations, the outcome would have been very different," the zoo said.

Earlier this year, tigers at a Danish zoo in Copenhagen killed a man who scaled a fence and crossed a moat to get into their den in July, and wolves at Sweden's largest zoo killed a zookeeper in their enclosure in June.

Developers On Transit Apps In iOS 6 Maps: Good For Users Long-Term, But Needs Improvement

transit-appsSince the iOS 6 update, there's been a lot of negative reaction from users, around issues of accuracy (this Tumblr says it all) and the lack of built-in transit directions. In particular, as a car-less city-dweller myself, I wanted to talk to developers who are filling the gap when it comes to public transit navigation, to find out what they thought about the way it's been implemented, what's coming next, and how all of this will ultimately pan out for users.

Rosewill Mechanical Keyboard RK-9000I

The Rosewill RK-9000I ($99.99 direct) is the special edition of the RK-9000, a high-end mechanical keyboard. Ditching Rosewill's usual black and red color scheme for white with black keys, it's a slick looking variation on the basic keyboard, and the back to basics approach will appeal to typists and gamers who don't want to mess with extra features. With solid construction inside and out, the Rosewill RK-9000I is a good keyboard for anyone who wants smooth typing and a minimum of extras.

Design
The RK-9000I has a black and white motif, with black keys contrasting against an ivory white chassis. There's no backlight, so gamers used to playing in the dark will be out of luck?try the Razer Black Widow Ultimate if you want something backlit. That's not to say, however, that the Rosewill has no visual accents. The internal metal frame of the RK-9000I?which also provides rock-solid stability for even the fiercest typist?has the same white color as the outer chassis, which contrasts nicely against the black keys. Other variations of the RK-9000 have clack exteriors and red internal frames, which also make for an interesting (if subtle) visual appeal.

Measuring 1.5 by 17.3 by 5.4 inches (HWD) with a tiered key layout, the RK-9000I is slightly more compact than the typical desktop keyboard, but doesn't sacrifice any typing comfort, and instead trims some of the fat that other manufacturers typically add to a keyboard, like extra buttons or indicator lights. The RK-9000I weighs 3.6 pounds, making it one of the heavier keyboards available?the 3.1-pound Editors' Choice Corsair Vengeance K90 is half a pound lighter, and even that was heavier than most competitors. This weight, when paired with firm rubber feet, keeps the RK-9000I stationary, even if you're an enthusiastic key-smasher.

The individual keys are laser printed with each character, so they will stay readable after months or even years of use. Each key uses Cherry MX Blue switches for fast response and durability. These are the same switches seen in the stellar Das Keyboard Model S Professional for Mac . Cherry MX Blue switches also have two stages of actuation, providing a better tactile response than most other switch types. The result is extremely durable, with a 50-million click lifecycle on each key, so marathon gamers and typists suffering from hypergraphia can hack away without the keyboard wearing out.

The only items included with the Rosewill RK-9000I are two braided 4-foot connector cables, for use with PS/2 and USB connections, respectively. The braided cable prevents tangling, but the 4-foot length might be a little short for anyone wanting to snake the cable around and behind objects to a PC tower. The RK-9000I offers slightly different anti-ghosting capability depending upon the connection used, as the USB connection offers 6-key anti-ghosting, but the PS/2 connection expands it to include all 104 keys, simultaneously.

Regardless of the connection used, the keyboard is a plug and play device, with no drivers to download or customization dashboards to fiddle with. This is a bit of a departure for gaming keyboards, which often include programmable macro buttons and swappable profiles, but the RK-9000I has none of that. Rosewill covers the RK-9000I with a three-year warranty on parts, and a one-year warranty on labor.

Performance
As part of my testing, I used the keyboard for several days, including the writing of this review. During this time, I've been impressed with the simplicity of the design?the RK-9000I is as basic as it gets. While I appreciate a device that doesn't get in my way with spurious buttons, there are some extra functions, like media and volume controls, that I had long since taken for granted as basic keyboard accoutrements. For some users, the RK-9000I will actually be a little too basic.

The typing feel is excellent, with a comfortable springy feel and a satisfying click with each press of the keys. Mechanical keyboard enthusiasts will find plenty to love about the RK-9000I, as it feels and sounds just right. In use, the RK-9000I didn't disrupt my typing flow at all. There was no need to grow accustomed to a unique layout, and the fast key response meant that there were no missed or double-pressed keystrokes even when typing quickly.

For a bare-bones mechanical keyboard, the Rosewill RK-9000I is very well-built, and perfectly suited to its task. When compared to other mechanical keyboards we've reviewed, however, it's just a little too basic. The Editors' Choice Corsair Vengeance K90 offers an array of extra features, like a detachable wrist-rest, volume control knob, and a phalanx of programmable macro keys, and manages to provide all of these extras without requiring extensive use of the customization software. The Rosewill RK-9000I doesn't unseat it, partly because it cuts back just a bit too far on the extras, but that's not to say it isn't a superb keyboard. If you're looking for one of the best made keyboards available, the Rosewill RK-9000I is a worthy (albeit basic) model to put on the list.

Panetta talks computer hacking issues with Chinese

(AP) ? Despite several years of escalating diplomacy and warnings, the U.S. is making little headway in its efforts to tamp down aggressive Chinese cyberattacks against American companies and the government.

U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, who is wrapping up three days of meetings with military and civilian leaders, said he has brought the issue up at every session and come away with little more than agreements to talk again.

Meanwhile, cybersecurity analysts say the computer-based attacks emanating from China continue unabated, and in fact are expanding and focusing more intently on critical American oil, gas and other energy companies.

"No diplomatic actions have made a difference," said Richard Bejtlich, chief security officer for the Virginia-based cybersecurity firm Mandiant. "They remain aggressive ? they're kicked out one day and try to get back in the next day."

He said the China-backed hackers' tactics are also evolving, and they are more often going after corporate computer systems by breaching software weaknesses, rather than simply trying to get into a network by duping an individual employee. And he said they appear to be increasingly targeting lucrative energy companies.

Efforts by officials across the U.S. government have not seemed to have any impact, Bejtlich said, adding: "The Chinese don't seem to care. So I don't have any hope that the dialogue is reaching anyone of any note."

Panetta, who is leaving China on Thursday, met with China's leader-in-waiting, Xi Jinping, Wednesday and afterward told reporters that he urged Xi and other leaders to have an ongoing dialogue with the United States about the cyber threat.

"I think it's clear that they want to engage in a dialogue on this issue," Panetta said, "and I guess that's the most important thing. That's the beginning of trying to perhaps be able to develop an approach to dealing with cyber issues that has some semblance of order here as opposed to having countries basically all flying in the dark."

Chinese officials have steadfastly denied the cyberattacks, saying they also are victims of computer hackers and breaches.

But nine months ago senior U.S. intelligence officials for the first time publicly accused China of systematically stealing American high-tech data for its own national economic gain. It was the most forceful and detailed airing of U.S. allegations against Beijing after years of private complaints, and it launched a more open push to combat the attacks.

James Lewis, a cybersecurity expert with the Center for Strategic and International Studies, said the U.S. is starting to push the Chinese harder on the issue, but the administration needs to do more.

"The damage from Chinese cyber espionage is easy to overstate but that doesn't mean we should accept it," he said. "The Bush administration was unaware of the problem; this administration needs to come up with a more dynamic response."

Cyber experts and U.S. officials agree that one of the biggest threats is the possibility of a miscalculation when a cyber breach triggers a clash between the two nations and there is no underlying relationship that can be used to discuss or work out the problem.

"How do you make sure something doesn't go off course and become a flashpoint for a bigger crisis?" Lewis said.

He added that the People's Liberation Army has been more confrontational lately, and lingering questions remain about the relationship between the Chinese political leaders and the military, and whether the civilian officials can effectively rein in the PLA.

Bejtlich and others describe a hierarchy of hackers in China that includes three main groups: those who are employed directly by the government, those who are affiliated with universities or quasi-government agencies and the so-called patriotic hackers who work on their own but direct their attacks against the U.S. and Western interests.

Bejtlich said some of the state-sponsored hackers appear to moonlight, stealing data from Western companies perhaps as a way of making more money. As long as they don't present a threat to China or Chinese companies, it is tolerated.

Panetta has warned repeatedly that cyberattacks and cyberwarfare could set off the next war. And U.S. officials and security experts say government and private industry systems are constantly being probed, breached and attacked. A key threat is an attack against critical infrastructure, including the electric grid, power plants or financial networks, that could plunge the U.S. into crisis.

Officials have said that at this point the main threats from China are intelligence espionage and the theft of corporate and high-tech data, rather than an all-out act of war. But they warn that hackers in China, many of whom work for, are backed by or are tolerated by the Chinese government, are capable of highly sophisticated attacks.

Obama on 'Letterman': What were the funniest bits?

What's the difference between running for office the first time and as an incumbent? 'The plane is nicer now,' the president said. And, at least on 'Letterman,' the questions are easy flying, too.

When did David Letterman turn into Bob Woodward?s thinner, more sardonic brother?

That was our first reaction after tuning in to watch President Obama?s appearance on Letterman?s ?Late Show? Tuesday night. It?s not just appearance we?re talking about, although the CBS talk-show host really does resemble the world-famous journalist, if you squint. It was also tone. The president took up the whole hour of Mr. Letterman?s show, and most of the questions, while respectful, weren?t jokey. It was sort of like entering a comedy club and finding a think tank seminar inside.

Yes, there were funny bits. Asked if it was tough to have teen daughters, Mr. Obama said, ?it worries me, but they?re surrounded by men with guns." Talking of being lifted bodily into the air by a Florida pizza shop owner, Obama opined that ?I think he fixed something in my back."

Unfortunately for Mitt Romney, the sharpest barbs were aimed at him, via a video prepared by Letterman?s staff. It was a portion of the now-famous fund-raising secret tape, overdubbed with ridiculous comments. ?I have a feeling Canada is planning something,? said the faux Romney at one point. ?My new cologne is now available at Macy?s," he says, a bit later. ?It?s Mittstified!?

Letterman asked Obama about his reaction to the tape, of course. (We mean the original address to donors, not the doctored version.) He gave an answer that might have Romney aides groaning, in that it was a velvet-gloved jab.

?When I won in 2008, 47 percent of the American people voted for John McCain, they didn?t vote for me. What I said on election night was even though you didn?t vote for me I hear your voices and I?m going to work as hard as I can to be your president.?

Letterman also pushed Obama pretty hard on the budget deficit. The comedian mentioned the ever-ticking debt clock featured at the Republican National Convention and said that the mounting numbers looked pretty scary.

Obama answered with a fairly detailed reply about how the debt came to accumulate, involving wars, tax cuts, a recession, and so forth. We think he moved pretty fast past the part his stimulus packages played in running up the red ink, but he at least mentioned them. The deficit isn?t a problem in the short term, he said, but in the long term and, maybe, the medium term as well.

?I don?t remember what the number was precisely,? he said, when Letterman asked what the deficit figure actually is.

The president made a pitch for bipartisanship, and said he hoped there would be more of it in a second term if he?s reelected. He said that the military is not the face of the US in the Middle East, especially in Libya and Egypt, and that the US remains an indispensable nation for much of the world. As he often does, he pressed for a tax increase on the wealthy as part of a future deficit-reduction plan.

At one point Letterman asked him the difference between running for office the first time and as an incumbent.

?The plane is nicer now,? Obama said.

Overall, the appearance shows, once again, why politicians increasingly pick nontraditional media venues over sparring with the Washington press corps. Obama got to make his policy case in a relaxed, controlled setting without surprises or truly tough questions. (We wish Letterman had asked whether US drone strikes contribute to Middle East unrest, for instance.)

Ironically, on his secret fund-raiser video Romney complains about Letterman, saying that since he (Romney) has appeared more often on Jan Leno?s ?Tonight Show," Letterman is jealous.

?Now Letterman hates me because I?ve been on Leno more than him,? said Romney.

But Romney?s campaign knows well of the talk-show campaign imperative. The ex-Massachusetts governor is now scheduled to appear on ?The View? in October, even though on the fundraising video he called it a ?high-risk? show because most of its female hosts are liberals.

A computer science student has produced an application to consult maps of mountains in 3-D

You could almost say that Mara Teresa Ruiz-Monzn (Vitoria-Gasteiz, Basque Country, 1988) carries the mountain around in her pocket. The slopes, spurs and drops of this mountain are very realistically represented on the mobile phone of this student who has recently graduated in Computer Sciences at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU). This was in fact her end-of-studies project: to develop an application to be able to use 3D geolocation on android smartphones. "It resembles Google Earth, but has a more specific purpose," she explains. It has been devised for mountaineers so that when it is foggy they can find their way by looking at their mobile phone screens. When the horizon is fuzzy, ordinary maps cannot really help us to position ourselves or to know whether we could be getting too close to a precipice. This 3D application is designed to meet these needs.

Ruiz has had to combine different knowledge, systems and all kinds of data to be able to develop her project. Apart from mastering Android, she has had to incorporate into it certain programs that are compatible with it, like OpenGL ES (graphic programming interface), LaTeX (text processing system) and Shapefile (geodata file format). She has also learnt from videogames to draw the 3D surfaces, and has obtained relief maps and other geographical data on the Basque Autonomous Community (region) over the www.geoeuskadi.net website of the Government of the Basque Autonomous Community. But it is not enough just to gather the most detailed maps; the application has to know where the user is and therefore which map to display to him or her. For this purpose, this computer scientist has made use of the electronic compass available on smartphones: "I use the compass like a camera. I detect which way the phone is looking and I draw the surface existing on that stretch of terrain so that he or she can see what is there."

Ruiz explains that it has been no easy task creating the surface, managing all the information, detecting the location and managing to download the right files on the basis of all this. But the biggest difficulties were caused by the limited memory capacity of mobile phones: "A lot of information has to be managed and the most difficult thing was to enter all this without exceeding the memory limits of mobile phones."

Without the Internet

Naturally, this tool needs the Internet to make the appropriate geolocation consultations at each moment, and downloading such large files (running to several Mbytes) over the Internet can take quite a time. To prevent the application crashing in situations like this, Ruiz has been developing a mechanism; it still needs to be improved further, but it is progressing nicely. "The downloads are done in background mode, so the application can go on working even though not all the files may be available. This is so that you can go on using your mobile during the download, too," she explains.

In any case, it has to be remembered that in the mountains mobiles often end up out of range and in these cases the Internet cannot be used. For this very reason this application has the option of using it without a connection. But in this case, you have to do your homework before setting off: "If you download the files beforehand at home and on a card, it can be done."

Now that Ruiz has had her viva on her end-of-studies project, she has completed her degree in Computer Sciences but is planning to go on developing the application she has created. "Some minimal improvements have to be made, but I think there could be a possibility of marketing it. I don't yet know whether I will sell it, whether I will release the code... But there are possibilities. I'll see," she says.
