Yemenis rally for freedom for detained protesters

SANAA, Yemen (AP) ? Thousands of Yemenis rallied the capital Sanaa on Saturday, urging authorities to release 117 protesters arrested during the yearlong popular uprising against former President Ali Abdullah Saleh.

Activist Fathi al-Baadani said the rally is also a protest against the government's sluggishness to release the detainees despite an order to review their cases and set them free.

The delay is due to the fact that Saleh's followers still hold influential security and military positions, Al-Baadani added.

Yemen's Human Rights Minister Huriya Mashhour confirmed the number of detained protesters on Saturday, but added that others are being held in unofficial detention centers. Youth groups behind the uprising that led to Saleh's ouster say that more than 80 people are detained in such unofficial centers.

Sanaa radio said Prime Minister Salem Mohammed Bassindwa expressed strong dissatisfaction with several military, security and intelligence institutions over the lack of action to free the prisoners.

The radio quoted Bassindwa as telling a group of youth representatives that he and President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi had already instructed authorities to speed up the administrative process and free those held in unofficial detention centers.

Meanwhile, a security official said unidentified gunmen assassinated a security officer, Jaber Hadi Jaadan, in western of Sanaa on Friday.

The official, speaking on condition of anonymity according to regulations, said he did not know the reason behind the killing, but noted that it fell within a pattern of recent attacks on senior army and security officers by al-Qaida militants.

On Tuesday, unknown gunmen assassinated a security official in Mukalla, the provincial capital of Hadramaout province, while a day earlier, gunmen fired at the car of Yahya al-Arasy, President Hadi's press secretary. He escaped unharmed.

Earlier this month, Col. Abdullah al-Maouzaei, charged with hunting down members of al-Qaida, was killed when his vehicle blew up as he turned on the ignition outside his home in the southern port city of Aden. Lt. Col. Mohammed al-Qudami, who was the intelligence chief for one of the sectors of Sanaa, was killed in a similar way.

Maj. Gen. Salem Ali al-Quton, an army commander leading the fight against al-Qaida in the country's south, was killed last month in Aden by a suicide bomber while he was traveling in a three-car convoy.

Why Sally Ride's sexuality really matters

America's first woman in space blazed a trail for equality in the sciences thanks to her sex and her sexuality

My girlfriend was the one who pointed out to me that Sally Ride had a female partner.

I was a mess on Monday when I learned that Ride, who became the first American woman to fly in space in 1983, had died. I had no idea she was even sick ? at her request, NASA had kept her 17-month battle with pancreatic cancer secret.

Ride was one of my childhood heroes. I dressed as her for Halloween when I was aged eight and my lifelong passion for space was first budding. Ride's legacy is mostly one of inclusion: bringing more women into science, encouraging girls to think they can do anything. She was a living example of how to crush gender stereotypes, even as she dodged sexist questions from the media. Her first flight on the space shuttle Challenger was before I was born. Thanks to her, I grew up in a world where my sex was not a barrier to the stars.

It runs even deeper for me, as a science writer. When I found out she had double majored in physics and English in college, I felt an intense feeling of identification ? she was like me. I too loved both science and words, and felt a bit of tension about it ? but if the first American woman in space could cross that line, I could too.

And I felt that same sense of recognition when my girlfriend read me this line from Ride's obituary, that she was "survived by her partner of 27 years, Tam O'Shaughnessy." I was elated. Again, Sally Ride was someone like me.

This is why I think Ride's sexuality matters. If her gender matters for diversity reasons, her sexuality matters too, for the same reason.

Role models only work if you see yourself reflected in them. When young people imagine their possible futures ? what career to pursue, where to live, who to spend time with ? one of the most important questions in deciding what path to take is, "Will I find people like me there?"

Psychologists call this "ambient belonging", and it's been shown to have an effect on things like college students' choice of subjects. If you feel that your gender, race, sexuality or love of science fiction sets you apart, then seeing people like you in a certain field will make you more likely to go into it. And the reverse is also true.

Which makes things complicated when it comes to someone like Ride. She was neither out nor deeply in the closet, it seems. Ride doesn't appear to have kept her partnership with O'Shaughnessy particularly secret. They worked together and wrote books together. Would they have legally married if they could? We may never know. But Ride's sex was visible in a way that her sexuality wasn't. She didn't need to put much effort into hiding it for us to overlook it.

Even when you're actively looking, it can be hard to find reflections of yourself in the world. I know that it's not just me. The March meeting of the American Physical Society held the first-ever session on sexual and gender diversity issues in physics this year.

One of the organisers, Elena Long of Kent State University, had searched for resources for LGBT+ physicists ? or even just evidence that others existed ? and found nothing (LGBT stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender, while the plus sign includes other sexual orientations or gender identities including intersexed, queer, questioning, asexual or pansexual).

One of the main conclusions of the meeting was that having role models who are open about their sexuality, and having a support network was necessary for LGBT+ physicists to feel safe and comfortable in their departments ? and crucial to a successful career.

"I think showing successful academics who are out is an important way to dispel the notion that being out precludes or limits one's professional opportunities," wrote one anonymous attendee.

"There are other people like me who are further in their careers," wrote another. "I know a number of queer students or allies that are students, but I have no visible, contemporary queer scientist role models."

Now we have Sally Ride.?????????

Afraid of accidentally buying a house? | St. Paul Real Estate Blog

For Home buyers, For Home Sellers

by Teresa Boardman, on 26 July 2012

dollhouse
?

There are casualties in multiple offer situations. ?Only one home buyer can buy the home. ?The other offerers get told by their agent over the phone that their offer was rejected. ?They rarely see anything in writing from anyone and after they move on and start looking at houses they worry about that rejected offer that is still out there.

Here are a couple of things to keep in mind:

1. ?Chances are your earnest money check never went to the sellers. ?Without the earnest money check the contract may not be valid. ?It should be easy enough to find out if the check was cashed and who cashed it.?

2. ?A contract to purchase a home signed by a buyer only is not complete or what we call fully "executed".?

3. ?In Minnesota to be valid a contract has to be signed by all parties and delivered to them. ?It can be delivered any number of ways including by email.?

4. ?Your agent can have a cancellation drawn up and signed by both parties even though there was no executed contract. ?This can also be done by email or on a sheet of paper with the date, the property address and the date of the contract and signatures of the sellers.?

Your agent could also get an email from the sellers agent stating that the sellers rejected your offer and your agent could send that along to you. ?Personally I prefer to do as much as possible in writing so that there is a paper trail. ? I understand how it must feel to a buyer to have that contract out there. ?

There are several steps in the home buying process that happen after the contract is signed by both parties and a purchase agreement can still be cancelled.?

As an agent I am also always ready to show what I did with a contract step by step. ?How does the buyer know that the offer got to the seller? ??

As a buyer if you are really worried about it you can always ask your attorney.?

Remember real estate is local and maybe in your area you can accidentally ?buy a house.?

Android NFC 'hacking' is ingenious, but not yet dangerous

Android Central

The Black Hat Conference takes place in Las Vegas this week, where hackers, security experts and representatives from major companies meet to discuss all things relating to information security. If you're following the news out of the conference today, you may have come across reports of a new security vulnerability in Android (and NFC-enabled Meego phones) that could allow a malicious NFC (near-field communication) tag to beam malware directly onto your phone. Sounds terrifying, right? Now hackers can take over your smartphone without you even doing anything. But as is always the case with these kinds of security issues, it's not as simple as it seems, and this NFC 'hack,' sexy and technically impressive as it is, isn't really anything particularly scary to regular smartphone users.

Read on to find out why.

Self Improvement

If someone isn't (pushing themselves) working on improving they're working on failing.
an example is a fat person, if they don't work on losing then they'll only gain or remain stagnent. Or if a person doesn't challange the brain by continuing education or learning something new the brain doesn't improve. So where do you stand? Production or destruction? Have you set goals?

?Getting Excited by the Writing & Wanting More of It?: Ralph Wessman

Shortly before the launch of famous reporter 43 in late May I asked Ralph Wessman, the founder and long time editor of the magazine, for some background information on the magazine. At the time my intention was to include this in a review of the final issue of famous reporter that he was going edit (the very final issue, No. 44, will be edited by Michael Sharkey and Dael Allison). What he sent me, however, was a detailed personal account of the history of famous reporter. In my view it would be a crime not to publish his account in full ? so here (with a few minor edits) is Ralph Wessman on the 25 years he has spent publishing and editing the famous reporter?..

The cover of issue 1 of the famous reporter.

I remember a conversation with Philip Mead some years ago where I tried to explain to him that my magazine was like an extension of myself ? like being blessed with another arm if you want to put it in a physical context though that?s not what I meant ? and Philip nodded in agreement and more importantly, understanding. Perhaps I shouldn?t have been surprised but I?d forgotten at the time that Philip had been an editor himself ? of Meanjin.

At other times I used to say that with my magazine I?d found a place to park my head.

The beginning

I had no idea what I was doing when I began The Famous Reporter, although I?d taken a small publishing step with a small newsletter distributed free throughout St Kilda ? St Kilda Beat ? for three years. Then a friend established a literary journal, On the Off Beat, a magazine of women?s short stories. The editor had the advantage of working with a printer, so it was a case of satisfying an aesthetic urge while on the job. I liked the results, I was both interested, and encouraged, I have to admit, to have a go at it too.

So I did ?and began with my ex wife a short story magazine. In 1986 I sent off letters to writing groups and universities around the country seeking material and early in 1987 we had enough material for an issue that we typed up on our old typewriter at home. Ambitious, we had no idea of the practicalities of producing a magazine.

We had problems finding a name, famous reporter as a name doesn?t do much for me these days but it?s too late to change it. Shane McCauley ? a West Australian poet I?m in touch with ? once said that he didn?t bother submitting to famous reporter for years and years because he was under the impression it was a magazine publishing material in the crime genre.

We began by publishing 500 copies for the first couple of issues; I guess a lack of knowledge is a dangerous thing, offset by possibility of making the thing work. I?ve never sold 500 copies of an issue of famous reporter, a couple of hundred copies is the norm.

Issue 2.

I had little knowledge of Australian literature other than as a general reader, so for the first three issues the magazine we published only short stories. It wasn?t until the fourth issue that we began experimenting with other material ? in that issue there were not one but three interviews ? with John Tranter (http://www.the-write-stuff.com.au/archives/vol-8/tranter.html), Mary Blackwood (http://walleahpress.com.au/FR4Blackwood.html) and Georgia Savage (http://walleahpress.com.au/FR4Savage.html). Issue five saw a further three interviews this time with Hilarie Lindsay, Chris Mansell (http://walleahpress.com.au/Int-Mansell.html) and Garry Disher (http://walleahpress.com.au/Int-Disher.html). Issue 5 also contained the first couple of poems appeared in the magazine, the first by Sue Moss (http://walleahpress.com.au/FR5Moss.html), something I?d heard her reading in at an event Battery Point & the first piece of poetry I actively sought out. ?I?ve? dined out on that story?, Sue?s told me since. The other came courtesy of a wonderful public talk that Libby Hathorn gave in 1990 which she allowed me to use ? and illustrating her conversation was a poem.

Of course more poetry ? more poetry contributors ? appear in the magazine now than anything else. I?m interested in poetry, fiction, essays, reviews and haiku. Arts Tasmania has funded the magazine since 1994, so we?ve been able to offer a little money to contributors

The launch for FR43 was held on Wednesday 30th May in Hobart. Usually a decent crowd turns up to famous reporter launches in Hobart, anything from thirty to ninety ? but it?s different on the mainland. We?ve had launches in places including Melbourne, Adelaide ? twice ? Sydney, Newcastle [that was lovely] and the Blue Mountains. But the first time in Adelaide, when I took my son Jazz along with me, he was twelve at the time was interesting. I remember how Graham Rowlands and I tried lots of promotion, but on the night there were seventeen of us who turned up, including Jazz and me. However I tried Adelaide several years later, and had a great time, taking my other son Noah with me, a mad keen Aussie Rules supporter so holding a launch & taking my son to the footy was killing two birds with the one stone. We had an audience of thirty-five or so that night in Adelaide, and I managed to put to rest something that had been holding me back for years ? my awe of Jan Owen. I?d been in awe of her poetry for years and I?d often think when a poetry submission turned up in the mail from Jan, why me? Why am I blessed? But I invited her along to the launch and she turned up and put me at ease so quickly, from memory it was along the lines of: ?like your magazine Ralph, enjoying your launch, don?t particularly care one way or the other about your footy team tomorrow night but if that?s your bent so be it ?? yes it was a very good launch for more reasons than one.

But you never know how they will go, which is why it?s not a bad thing to do to have a launch as part of a reading programme put on by local writer?s groups, which is what [haiku editor] Lyn Reeves and I did with the magazine in Byron Bay some years ago. It was the Christmas function for the writing group Dangerously Poetic, at Bangalow just a little outside of Byron Bay. And we had a dozen readers, people we?ve met along the way as both Lyn and I have strong links with the area, and we had an audience of over eighty people and we had a fine time.

The reasons for one?s involvement with a literary magazine.

I am somewhat moved by Ken Bolton?s argument, the premise that a magazine renews itself, its vitality, by finding a course and sticking with it through thick and thin on a particular aesthetic, political [whatever] direction. This is the opposite of the eclectic magazine, the opposite of something like famous reporter. I?m somewhat persuaded by Ken?s arguments, I admit. But then I look at what is possible with a magazine such as Meanjin which often used to focus on thematic pieces ? This is a danger, of course, if you take on a topic which has little appeal. But over the years, in my opion, Meanjin has managed to publish exciting writers speaking on a range of issues, resulting in eminently readable and successful issues of the magazine. So yes, I feel the eclectic magazine has something to offer.

I don?t see that FR set out to ?change anything?, it?s a case of simply getting excited by the writing and wanting more of it. There are various styles of magazine, some accept contributions only by invitation. I?ve gone the other way and accept through submissions and seek out the occasional article that I seek out, I do this particularly with reviews. The result is an eclectic magazine. That?s not to say that I don?t seek to question, what would be the point of writing if it didn?t?

Mistakes

Invariably you make mistakes. Would the process be worthwhile if there wasn?t the possibility for making mistakes, the possibility of scaring yourself silly by what you?re about to write or publish next?.

  • interviewing Mary Blackwood for the magazine and losing the tape I?d made of it and having to return to interview Mary for the second time.
  • issue three, I typed it up in a computer software package but for some reason experienced difficulty getting the magazine to do exactly what I wanted so reinstalled the software package, thinking it would reinstall alongside the old one and I could copy my files across, I was horrified to find it installed over the old one and I lost my complete magazine, had to start again. I hadn?t saved any of the stories into word, simply typed them straight into the package.
  • Another terrible moment was the day Kris Hemensley, of Collected Works Bookshop in Melbourne, telephoned to say that he?d just received his copy of famous reporter in which I?d published a launch speech he?d made in Melbourne some weeks before for a Melbourne literary magazine, Salt-Lick. I?d sent Kris a proof copy of the speech before publication, he?d duly made a few changes only to find to his dismay that, on publication, the mistakes remained. I?d made the changes, but used the wrong version of the speech. This was compounded by the fact I?d be meeting Kris face to face in a week?s time when he was due to launch my own magazine.

The lovely moments

  • One of the lovely things is that every six months Lyn Reeves sends me the pages of haiku to go into the next issue, with the bio details of each contributor. I don?t have to lift a finger throughout the whole process, I think it says something for the possibilities for literary and publishing collaborations.
  • The time I interviewed Richard Flanagan and Pete Hay in my small South Hobart flat. Towards the end of the end of the interview I had to leave for the gents, when I returned I found Pete and Richard? still chatting, the tape recorder still rolling. I didn?t transcribe the tape till two weeks later to hear Richard telling Pete he?d won the 1995 Victorian Premier?s Award for his novel Death of a River Guide. ?But you?re sworn to secrecy till October 20th Pete?, Flanagan went on. I suppose by implication I was sworn to secrecy too, it was a special moment.
  • Anna Bianke: one of the interesting things for me was that when I began the magazine I?d get a rush of excitement when a piece of writing came in from someone whose name I knew, and particularly, of course, if they were someone whose writing I respected. Well one day in the mailbox arrived a short story manuscript from Anna Bianke, of Launceston, and I was familiar with Anna?s work because I?d read several of her pieces in Overland. In fact her name was emblazoned across the front cover of Overland 101. You might remember, if you enjoy your magazines, that Stephen Murray-Smith who was editor of Overland at the time published a 100th commemorative issue, but found himself with so much exciting material that he the 101st issue became a commemorative issue as well, big and fat with lots of good reading. So the arrival of Anna?s manuscript meant quite a lot to me, and her story read with a delicate light touch, it was a beautiful piece of writing and I felt so proud to be able to publish and I suppose to some extent, to feel as if I really was some part of that great fraternity of Australian writing. It wasn?t until some years and perhaps some pieces of writing later, that Anna dropped me a line with an apology and an admission that for years she?d hid behind a pseudonym and that she wasn?t Anna Bianke of Launceston at all, but Stella Kent ? playwright and fiction writer ? of Launceston. And I?m pleased to say that my publishing relationship with Stella continues ? only two or three weeks ago, she sent me an unpublished manuscript she?d come across, a poetry manuscript written by two young Northern Tasmanian students that simply blew her away ? she wondered if any might interest me. ?And if not,? she added, ?simply throw it away?. How wonderful is that, when someone with an eye for good writing takes the time to mail along something that moves them, how much simpler does an editor?s job become?
  • I think one of my highlights was to publish Pete Hay?s collection of essays some years back, Vandiemonian Essays. I?m a strong admirer of Pete and his work and it was an honour to be able to publish his book, just as it was to follow up with a collection of his poems three years later. There were 180 to 190 people at the launch of his book of essays ? and what a launch it was! We sold 90 copies of the book at $20 each, I?d known there?d too many people in attendance to be able to cater for normally as I do with a famous reporter launch ? ?that is spend a couple of hundred dollars on light food, softdrink and wine ? so I bought about five hundred dollars of various drinks ? stubbies of beer, stout, softdrink ? and sold them for cost price ? and it was just so phenomenally successful.

And to the present?

I like the idea of continuing to publish. I?ve been using Lightning Source in Melbourne, a company with offices in the US, France and the UK and which set up in Melbourne last year. If you do the set up yourself, and provide your book in Indesign and with a cover that?s been Photoshopped ? you can manage to publish relatively cheaply, so I?m giving it a go.

I?ve let my enthusiasm carry me away again and taken on probably a bit too much to chew, nevertheless I?m looking at producing several books later in the year, individual poetry books by four local writers ? Philomena van Rijswijk, Anne Kellas, Susan Austin, and Cameron Hindrum. A book by Jill Jones, and a joint effort from Kevin Brophy and Nathan Curnow The Jones and Curnow/Brophy books are planned for August and to be available at the Queensland Poetry Festival where both Jill and Nathan are on the programme.

And once I?ve managed to fulfil the promises and half promises of my initial enthusiasm, I might slow down a bit and look a little more closely at the possibilities of wider publishing, of essays for instance.? And try to come to grips a little more with Dreamweaver and cascading style sheets so I can better promote and present the work of the writers I?m dealing with.

3 Fun-Filled Ways to Hang with Your Baby/Toddler in the - Mom-Blog

I?m a stay at home mom with a one-year-old little boy.? Despite the fact that I?m a freak about my son?s nap schedule (when he sleeps we all sleep, and MAMA needs her sleep!), the phrase ?stay-at-home? is a misnomer for us.? Neither of us, me or my son, could stay at home all the time. ?So, here are a few relatively inexpensive ways to either a.) get out of the house with your LO, or b.) socialize with other moms and their offspring.

  1. PLAYDATES, PLAYDATES, PLAYDATES
I know, it?s obvious, right?? Well, it wasn?t that easy for me.? I didn?t have many fellow SAHM friends, our local kids? play-place closed down; how was I supposed to have a playdate?? Basically, I got bold.? I found a local mom?s listserv.? I literally emailed the group and said, ?I don?t know that many moms; can I join your playgroup??? I had several moms in the same boat email me back, we formed our own playgroup, and we?re currently becoming good friends!? One tip: I know it?s difficult to make plans when you have a baby- nap schedules can be inconsistent.? However, if you do make plans with other mamas for a date, do try your darndist to show up consistently.? The moms will understand when you just can?t, but you?re not going to make lasting friendships if you?re not actually there.
  2. WATER, WATER, WATER
Another no-brainer, right?? But, seriously, how else are you going to enjoy the outdoors with a baby in July?? A few days ago I got talked into going to our local reservoir (we have a lack of large bodies of water in Colorado) for a little dip.? It was a blast!? Granted, the next day, the res. shut down due to high levels of bacteria in the water, and I did, in fact, feel queasy, but whatever, right?? Concurrently, a friend of mine bought one of those water tables (on sale) and the babies LOVE to stand there and play with the toys getting wet.
  3. FIND FUN WAYS TO PLAY INDOORS
Find an indoor play-place for crawlers/new walkers to beat the heat.? There are a few options in our area.? One is our local indoor mall.? It?s great- air-conditioned, baby can play, and we can stroll around.? The second is a place called ?The Loft? (in case local Boulder moms don?t know) and it?s marketed as a ?caf?? for moms and little ones under 5.? It has a full-on crawler gym area.

Being a SAHM isn?t easy, so I try to make plans throughout the week to break it up for us and add some fun into our days.? If we have set plans for 3 of the 5 days of the work-week, we?re hitting our goal!? I hope you have a wonderful, plan-filled summer, and if you have other ideas for making it a great summer with a babies or toddlers, do share!

About Today?s Guest Post Author,Jessie Akos:
Jessie lives with her husband, baby, and goofy, lovable dog named Bella in beautiful Boulder, Colorado.? They run (ahem, they try), hike, mountain bike, ski, and generally enjoy the outdoors when they aren?t freakishly adhering to Z?s nap schedule or swamped with snot, poop, or any other such bodily function of their child.? Yes, she talks about it.? All of it.? But she also speaks from her heart; she tries to write the truth as she sees it; through rose-colored glasses?? Maybe. ?You can visit Jessie at: Parenting is a Big Deal, on Facebook, Twitter or Pinterest.

North Korea leader's wife can teach him about the enemy

SEOUL (Reuters) - When North Korea's new leader needs to know something about his arch enemy, he can ask his wife. In contrast to the family dynasty of dictators she has married into, Ri Sol-ju has actually been to South Korea.

North Korean television on Wednesday put to rest weeks of speculation by announcing that the young, mystery woman recently seen accompanying leader Kim Jong-un was indeed his wife.

Ri was a part of a youth supporters group for the Asian Athletics Championships in South Korea in 2005, a lawmaker who attended a meeting with the intelligence service told Reuters on Thursday.

The then-teenager from a prestigious school in Pyongyang donned a Korean traditional costume and was part of a choir that sang "I like my country the most".

Her recent appearance alongside her husband marks a sharp break from the image of Kim's father who was never shown in public with any of his wives or consorts and presented a more forbidding image.

The older Kim, who died last December, did hold the country's only summits with the South, but in both cases his southern counterparts had to cross one of the world's most heavily defended borders to meet him. the two countries have technically been at war since the end of the 1950-53 Korean War.

Pyongyang regularly threatens to blast its neighbor into oblivion.

One of the few people known to have met Ri -- or at least someone from the North with the same name and about the same age -- did so at a meeting of teachers from the two Koreas in 2004.

"She was quiet sometimes, but also outgoing" Yoon Keun-hyeok, a South Korean elementary school teacher who attended the meeting, told Reuters.

"We want to take classes by the South's teachers after being reunited as soon as possible," Yoon quoted Ri as saying.

Women who survived Colo. shooting grieve for hero boyfriends

Of the 12 people killed in the Aurora theater shooting, four of them were men who made the ultimate sacrifice to protect their girlfriends. Now, each of these women are struggling to come to terms with both their grief and their gratitude.

Alexander Teves, 24, attended the midnight screening of "The Dark Knight Rises" with his girlfriend Amanda Lindgren , 24,and another friend.

When suspected gunman James Holmes opened fire in the sold out theater, Teves immediately lunged to block Lindgren from the gunfire.

"I was really, really confused at first about what was going on, so confused," Lindgren told ABC News. "But, it's like Alex didn't even hesitate. Because I sat there for a minute, not knowing what was going on, and he held me down and he covered my head and he said, 'Shh stay down. It's ok. Shh just stay down.' So I did."

Teves blocked the bullets from Lindgren but he was shot and killed. She was not hit.

"He was my angel that night, but he was my angel every day I knew him," Lindgren said. "I'm broken."

Lindgren reflected on the profoundly close relationship she had with Teves, saying that the couple would not go an hour in the day "without missing each other terribly."

"My other half was just ripped apart from me and so for me it's still unreal," she said. "I can't picture my life without him. How do you? When someone loves you that much and you love somebody that much?how do you believe that this is real? And of all places. We were in that theater, that specific room. We were just supposed to watch a movie."

(Matt McClain/The Washington Post via Getty Images)When asked if she thought Teves knew he was putting himself in danger for her, Lindgren said, "I know he did. He'd do anything for me. He always told me that, too. I just wish I could have protected him the same way he protected me."

Teves' father Tom Teves is also devastated, but said that his son is still with him.

"I'm hollow. But Alex has come and brought me?from heaven, he's been bringing me hope," Teves told ABC News. "He's still my inspiration. And I know now more than ever that there is a God. Because of Alex. Because Alex is still coming through. Because that's the kind of man he is."

Elsewhere in theater nine, John Larimer and his girlfriend Julia Vojtsek went through a similar situation.

U.S. Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class John Larimer, 26, and his girlfriend Julia Vojtsek, 23, were sitting int the middle of the theater when the shooting began.

"John immediately and instinctively covered me and brought me to the ground in order to protect me from any danger," Vojtsek wrote in a statement. "Moments later, John knowingly shielded me from a spray of gunshots. It was then I believe John was hit with a bullet that would have very possibly struck me. I feel very strongly that I was saved by John and his ultimate kindness."

The couple had known each other since they were 21 and 18 years old when they met working at a Chili's in Illinois, where they are both from. Larimer was home for the summer from school and Vojtsek was getting ready to go to college. They became close and stayed in touch with Facebook and text messages.

This summer, Vojtsek's father Fred Vojtsek came to Colorado to work for an extended period of time. When Julia Vojtsek traveled to Colorado to spend part of her summer with her father, she told him that Larimer was stationed in Aurora and he encouraged her to see him.

Theater Survivors Grieve For Hero Boyfriends

"I wanted her to see him because he would have been a kid that a father wants to see his daughter with, a kid of values and things like that," Fred Vojtsek told ABCNews.com. He said his daughter and Larimer became boyfriend and girlfriend about three weeks ago. "So many kids these days don't really want to hear what parents have to say or engage or listen, and he did. That's what stood out with me."

"We were planning on going to church Saturday night," Vojstek said. "He was a good kid."

Fred Vojstek has been staying in a place just minutes away from from the Century 16 movie theater where the shooting took place. His panicked daughter called him as she was running out of the theater and he arrived within minutes of the shooting.

"She was hysterical and then she got more into a shock stage," Vojtsek said.

Since then, Julia Vojtsek has told her father that she was at the movie with Larimer, two other navy men and a woman. Fred Vojtsek said that after Larimer was shot, the other two navy members were "unbelievable" in making sure his daughter got out safely, even though they had just met her earlier that day.

"I'm grateful my daughter is alive and hopeful he can get through this," Vojtsek said, adding that she is "very, very traumatized."

He said that Larimer's family has been very good to his daughter and that he is "eternally grateful" for Larimer and his Navy friends for saving his daughter.

Vojtsek wrote that just weeks earlier, Larimer had spoken to her about his further advancement in the military.

"John convincingly stated to me that he wanted to be deployed for two simple reasons: He wanted to protect his country, and he wanted to save others from danger and harm," she wrote. "John adamantly wanted to make a difference in the world, and he thought that his military service would be the best chance for him to do so."

"John served his country to the fullest, fulfilling both of his goals," she added.

In addition to these two couples, Matthew McQuinn, 27, and Jon Blunk, 26, died saving their girlfriends in similar ways. Their girlfriends Samantha Yowler, 26, and Jansen Young, 21, did not respond to requests for comment.

Why Marketing and Branding can Make or Break any Business ...

Every since I stumbled across this little skill called SEO, I?witnessed?the growth of the Internet from a side most still have no clue about. I was also able to expand my knowledge beyond just an SEO and stepped into the world of Internet Marketing. A whole different ball game that my SEO skills meshed with well. Upon arriving to the dance, I began to notice the change from traditional marketing channels used to inform the masses to new age ones that placed businesses at the fingertips of those searching for a particular business or product. And it started to hit me - Marketing and Branding make all the difference in your businesses survival.

Why Marketing Keeps Your Business Alive

The old saying of "if you build it, they will come" has just about met the end of its road. The average business in the U.S. closes in the first 2 to 5 years of opening their doors, and the majority closed due to lack of marketing. Even if your business is in a busy area with tons of foot traffic, you just can't rely on people floating in on a whim. Creating a marketing plan allows your business to gain the attention it needs as long as it can be found by those seeking your brand or product.

  • Over 300 million daily searches are performed in the U.S.
  • 66% of those searches seeking a certain business, product or service contact or visit the business 82% of the time.

So when someone is searching for your product or brand, do they find you or your competition?

Branding is What It's All About

Marketing and Branding can actually be kissing cousins. Once you begin marketing your business, you've started to push your brand as well. A brand could be:

  • A product or service you offer
  • A certain type of business

Branding your business, product or service while Marketing is one thing, but building a solid reputation for it is what makes it stick. Growing your brand is all about its trust and reputation it builds in the eyes of its consumers. This means that what ever brand you offer the public of your network for sale, it has to be trust worthy enough to come back for more. If it doesn't accomplish this, then even your marketing is dead in the water because no one believes in your brand.

Market and Brand the Right Way

What do I mean by the right way? What I mean is make sure your marketing plan places your brand where people are searching for it. The number one issue with businesses opening is that they NEVER take the time to create a marketing plan or use old outdated marketing tactics expecting success. There lack of marketing knowledge and information doomed them from the start. Remember that your marketing Budget is ALWAYS a priority for your business. Without it, there is no real need to even open your business.

Lincee Ray: 'The Bachelorette' Finale Recap: Jef Wins Emily Maynard's Heart

Note: Do note read on if you have not seen the Season 8 finale of ABC's "The Bachelorette" with Emily Maynard.

I've been recapping "The Bachelorette" since 2003 and I can say with complete certainty that this has been my favorite season. Sure, I love certain characters from episodes of yore (be still my ever-loving Roberto, Ames and Reid heart) but for the first time in a long time, I actually ended the season with a feeling that I had been somewhat entertained each week instead of the usual, "Why does this show have to be two hours long when clearly 30 minutes could suffice?"

Perhaps I liked this year because of Emily's no nonsense attitude toward the traditional rules set forth by "Bachelor" nation. Maybe it was her Southern charm and integrity. It could have been her determination to actually take this reality show seriously for once by truly seeking out a connection that could spark a future relationship. I think she had viable candidates in both Arie and Jef and even though I agree with her father that you can't technically be in love with two people, I believe she did have genuine feelings for both. This reality, ironically, made for pretty good reality television.

Top Five Thoughts from the Finale

1. What's Up With the Random Studio Audience?
From the opening moments of the finale, we find Our Host Chris Harrison looking extremely debonaire in a black suit and pewter tie. Traditionally, Our Host is standing in front of either the entrance to Fancy Pants Resort & Spa or we just hear a generic voiceover anticipating the most dramatic rose ceremony ever in a velvety baritone. Instead, Chris is addressing an enthusiastic live studio audience with thought provoking questions such as, "Did you guys like that?" and "How hot is Arie?" It was confusing at first, but after Emily confides in Our Host that she doesn't need nor want a second meeting with Arie, we realize that Harrison is going to have to do some pretty fancy tap dancing to fill the gap left by an entire date, Neil Lane engagement ring session, video montage featuring a trip down memory lane and an almost proposal/rejection with Arie. Most of us would decide to cut the show down to one hour instead of featuring a woman named Potpourri quirkily suggest that Emily choose Arie so the rest of America can enjoy One F Jef. Chris' former Miss America hosting experience certainly came in handy during this "live" session.

2. Real Men Wear Pink
Jef convinces Emily that he is ready to meet Little Ricki on their last one-on-one date. They have an impromptu pool party and the moment Little Ricki let Jef borrow her pink swim goggles, I knew it was true love. When he allowed Little Ricki to push him in the pool, Ricki knew it was true love. And when Ricki asked her Mom if Jef could come back the next day, Emily knew it was true love. Ever the eternal rule-breaker, Emily goes rogue again, calls Harrison and straight up tells him that she has made up her mind and asks him politely to send the black SUV of doom to pick up Arie in the garden. Harrison, of course, makes her rip the Band-Aid herself and sends her to break the news.

3. Love Potion No. 9
Emily arrives in the flower garden where Arie has just concocted a love potion with the help of a very old Indian woman. He rubs the scented oil all over Emily's arms before she leads him to the notorious break-up bench. Though Botox has apparently permanently damaged her tear ducts, we know her crying is severe due to the choking and sobbing sounds she squeaks out even though zero liquid falls from her eyes. This goes on for a few minutes with Arie frantically asking, "What's wrong? What is it? Are you hurt? Did someone die?" The poor guy never once thought it was his fate that was being mourned at that moment. Somehow, Emily manages to convey, in a very indirect way, that she thinks he's perfect for her, yet not really. Confused, he sits there in a daze as she again clarifies that he's the one, except he's runner-up. Astounded by the realization that not only does his love potion not work, but that black SUV is waiting around for him, Arie bristles with a cold good-bye. It was a close call, but the ABC psychotherapist was not successful in making him cry.

2. The Most Ghetto Rose Ceremony Ever
Home Depot would like you to know that they did NOT sponsor the rose ceremony stage this season, and the limp ferns were purchased from the garden section of Lowes. For real? Clay pots, a splintery stage and some wilted flowers? And what was up with all the random swinging doors just laying up against the wall in the background? I'm convinced it was a secret sound stage in Los Angeles and all this took place after Emily and Jef dated for a few months before he proposed. Something was definitely shady about this whole scene because never in the history of the show has the engagement moment been so ugly. Perhaps the ABC intern got mono? Still ... it doesn't matter. You're on a beautiful island that no one can pronounce. I'm sure the beach would have been perfectly lovely with just the sand, surf and sunset. Am I right?

1. These Aren't Empty Words
One F Jef may be young, but he has the eloquence and maturity of an older, wiser Chris Harrison. His pre-proposal speech (and every other soliloquy for that matter) was simply perfect. After complementing his soon-to-be-bride, he gave props to the process which landed them in the current tacky environment and promised to give his heart and love to Emily and Little Ricki forever. And the entire country swooned together.

I may be going out on a very thin limb here, but I predict that this actually lasts. I know ABC is excited to pimp out an actual relationship that is healthy (besides Trista and Ryan) and one that seems to be bound for holy matrimony (we're still waiting JP and Ashley). What do you think? Will Emily and Jef get married in the spring? Was their proposal setting an actual set? Will Arie be the next Bachelor? Are you going to apply antibacterial hand sanitizer before watching the "Bachelor Pad" like I am? Sound off in the comments below!

While the OUYA ? the Android-based, hackable video game console ? is still raking in funds on its multi-million dollar Kickstarter project, the secretive nature of the project is raising questions for game developers.

?How can the OUYA convince developers who are sitting on the sidelines to jump in?? asks Gree Vice President of Studio Operations Anil Dharni. ?I am very interested, but where are the users? Where are the gamers??

Until three months ago, Dharni was the Chief Operating Officer of Funzio, which released three well-received titles on iOS and one on Android. He and CEO Ken Chui sold Funzio to Gree for $210 million, giving Gree, a Japanese social network that has been expanding aggressively into America, its own development team.

Dharni says OUYA has two distinct advantages: it is using Android as its platform, and its focus is on the television market. He said the biggest challenge its makers face will be luring developers to create games that will have to be programmed differently from any others on the Android market. Since the OUYA will use a?traditional console controller with a touchpad in the center, even games on the Android market will need to be restructured to work with it.

Is Your Child or Grandchild Leaving for College this Fall ...

Alice and Mark drove John out to Worcester and dropped him off at his dorm. The college was about two hours from their home on Cape Cod. Once he was moved in, Alice gave him a tearful goodbye. Things seemed to be going well that first semester of college. They talked and texted regularly. John hadn?t come home yet and everyone was excited to see him during the Thanksgiving break.

About 10pm on the Thursday before Thanksgiving, Alice and Mark received a call from Frank, John?s roommate. Frank explained that he was at the emergency room of the local hospital. He explained that he and John had been in a bad car accident. Frank was okay, but John didn?t seem to be doing well. The hospital wouldn?t tell Frank anything and he thought they should come to the hospital right away. Mark called the hospital to find out what was happening, but they would not tell him any information because John had not given them permission to discuss his medical care with anyone.

The drive to Worcester was nightmarish. When Alice and Mark finally arrived they found out that John had been moved to a room in the critical care unit. ?They went up to check on him. ?The nurse explained that John was resting now and while it might be a while before he was 100% he should be okay. ?Alice and Mark were relieved and started to ask more questions. But the nurse said until John woke up and gave permission for them to discuss his medical care she could not give any more information. Eventually, John did wake up and gave permission for his parents to speak to the doctors about his care. How could something like this happen?

It happens every fall at one college or another. Why? Because once a person reaches age 18, that person is a legal adult.? As an adult, no one else is entitled to make medical or financial decisions for us unless we authorize them to so. Our medical information is private and the federal HIPAA law says it is against the law for any medical person to discuss your private medical information with anyone beside yourself.

How can this situation be avoided? Well, prior to going to college, John should sign three basic documents: a HIPAA release, a healthcare proxy and a durable power of attorney. ?With these three documents John?s parents would be able to get the information they wanted about his situation from the hospital and make legal and medical decisions for John if John was not able to make them for himself.

Durable Power of Attorney ? This is a legal document in which your child/grandchild designates who he wants to make legal and financial decisions for him if he cannot make them for himself.? Our DPOA is extremely comprehensive.? It allows the agent to handle virtually all legal and financial matters for your child/grandchild.? Our DPOA is in effect right away.? This means the agent can use it even if the child/grandchild is not disabled. This is necessary for the DPOA to be accepted at many financial institutions.? Therefore, it is very important that your child/grandchild pick only people whom he trusts to be his agent on his Durable Power of Attorney. Every Durable Power of Attorney should have a primary agent and an alternate agent who would act only if the primary agent is unable to act for your child/grandchild.

Health Care Proxy ? This is a legal document in which your child/grandchild designates how he would want his agent to make his medical decisions if he cannot make them for himself.? It is only effective when a doctor indicates in writing that your child/grandchild is not able to make medical decisions for himself.? Every Health Care Proxy should have a primary agent and an alternate agent.

HIPAA Release ? The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act preserves the privacy of your child/grandchild?s medical information.? It prohibits access to his medical information to anyone except himself.? It also makes it very difficult for family members to assist each other with medical issues such as insurance, finding out about test results, speaking to a doctor or pharmacy about a prescription.? In our HIPAA Release, your child/grandchild authorizes the people listed on it to have access to his medical information.? The HIPAA agent can fax or give a copy of the HIPAA Release to the medical provider and then the medical provider will be allowed to speak with that person.

If you have a child or grandchild leaving for college, call about our College Student package. It is only available to post high school students who are children or grandchildren of Surprenant & Beneski, P.C. clients and are under the age of 24. The regular price for these three documents is $950 but during August and September of 2012 we will provide them to qualified college students for one payment of $750 or 3 payments of $260. How to Evaluate Personal Trainer Marketing Offers :: Get it Back ...

Don?t just jump in! Do your homework first!
Health and wellness is poised to become a leading industry in the next decade or even sooner. The number of people who make it their goal to develop healthy lifestyles is increasing by the day. Consequently, a person?s life span may become longer, especially with the breakthroughs in science and medicine. The increasing proliferation of personal trainer marketing ads and campaigns both on print and online is only one of the many indicators of this trend.? With so many fitness programs and personal trainers selling so many ways and strategies to get in shape, how does one know which of them is the right one? Here are three ways:

Find a program that is holistic.
The fitness program, first of all, should be holistic. Being healthy involves not only the body, but also the mind and psychological well being of a person. Just as obesity affects every facet of life, reversing it will cover all corners as well. A fitness program that offers only an exercise regimen will not suffice. Statistically, most of those who commit themselves only to rigorous physical activity to shed pounds are still susceptible to gaining twice the weight they lose.

Increase in weight is not entirely attributed to eating habits of people. It plays a role, for sure, but the unhealthy choices that people make have a deeper cause to it. Stress, for instance, triggers consumption of high-fat, high-sodium, and high-sugar food. A fitness program should confront such root causes and provide people with a systematic and sustainable approach to overcoming stress and other psychological reasons for overeating.

Your fitness program should be grounded in science

There is such a prevalence of ?lose-pounds-quick? fitness programs. Many of these health packages and personal trainer marketing strategies are driven more by profit rather than genuine concern for people who wish to lead healthier and longer lives. Instead of seeking more permanent approaches that will help people get and stay fit inside and out, they have the propensity to introduce methods of drastic weight loss without considering the serious biological implications of a sudden drop in body weight.

How the body works in burning and supplying energy is taken into account if the fitness program is indeed based on sound science. On the road toward a healthier physique, a program measures the pounds and the cholesterol levels, along with the rest of the fluids and fats in the body. This objectivity is also translated in the way fitness goals are set?they should be unique and tailor-fit to each individual. It is measurable and achievable in weeks and months.

Is there evidence?

Finally, fitness programs offered by personal trainer marketing plans should have ample evidence to back up their claims. While the modern media, to include Internet, are replete with testimonies of men and women who have become leaner and healthier as a result of certain programs, it is still advisable to verify and make inquiries, to test the empirical data, so to speak. Placing a call or sending an email asking for more information is one way to gauge the enthusiasm and sincerity of a personal trainer or a fitness program.
