World?s Most Powerful Offshore Turbine Catches Wind Gusts Two Football Pitches Wide

While it may not be the overall most-powerful wind turbine ever built, the multi-megawatt monstrosity that has just been installed off the coast of Belgium is certainly the most powerful to ever be caressed by a sea breeze.

The turbine, with a rated capacity of 6.15 megawatts, is part of a 48-turbine expansion at the ?800 million Thornton Bank wind farm about 20 miles off the coast of Belgium. In all, the park is expected to generate 325 MW a year, once all turbines are operational.

Each turbine is over two stories tall with 63-meter-long blades and a sweep radius of 126 meters?roughly the surface area of two football pitches. They are built by REpower Systems. ?The installation of the first 6 MW turbine in a commercial offshore wind farm is an important milestone for the entire offshore wind industry. It marks another step along the road towards larger offshore wind power plants with ever more powerful machines,? Prof. Martin Skiba, Head of Offshore Wind Power at RWE Innogy, said in a statement.

RWE expects to have 30 turbines installed by September of this year with the remaining 18 put in by the end of next year. When operational, the Thornton Bank wind park will be the largest offshore wind farm in Europe. It can generate enough power to light 600,000 homes. [RWE via Inhabitat]

Sun Country Airlines Resurrected and Stronger Than Before ...

Sun Country Airlines Simply Refuses To Go Down

They are known as being a small airline carrier based out of St. Paul Minnesota but the destinations they serve aren?t small at all ranging from the US to Mexico and points in between. This mighty little company seems to have a way of winning industry awards every year. This little engine that could has also fought to maintain their status as an airline that offers tremendous value that won?t break the bank if you?re on a budget. One example of this is that Sun Country has earned a spot in the top ten Travel and Leisure for four straight years. For four straight years Sun Country Airlines has been among the top ten in Travel & Leisure. Travel & Leisure has listed Sun Country among its top ten for four years running. For four years running Sun Country Airlines has been awarded a top ten position in Travel & Leisure. And that?s only the beginning, Conde Nast Traveler has picked Sun Country Airlines for their top honors for three straight years. But that?s not the end of their award winning career, Conde Nast traveler has chosen them for top honors three years running. And this is of course only the beginning others like Conde Nast Traveler have even kept Sun Country in top honors for three years. For the past three years and counting Conde Nast Traveler has help Sun Country in its top honors club as well. Treating the customer right is what this airline is all about which you will see here in this article.

If you take a look at Sun Country Airlines? website, you will see that they are a firm believer in the qualities and attitudes that the airline industry was built on. All air travelers want to get where they are going with no problems, and that is what Sun Country tries very hard to give. This company is upfront about their old-fashioned beliefs about air travel ? it is stated on their website for all to see. However, one thing about those words is they are not empty when you consider their awards and official recognition over the years.

In the fall of 2010, the airline was fully involved with bankruptcy proceedings and a plan for reorganization was in place. What that means is a bankruptcy judge must make a determination and decision whether or not to grant approval. Many times any creditors who are involved with weigh the decision as well. It is important for the creditors to approve the plan because that is how they will recoup their investment. The usual way these proceedings work is for a percentage of cash to be repaid, and then there is a percentage of equity that is awarded to the creditors.

Sun Country also offers leasing options varying in choice from wet to dry lease options. Having the airline be in control of the aircraft operation makes the wet lease, which includes everything you need for a leased flight including the crew and insurance as well as maintenance, is a very popular lease option. Sun Country goes above and beyond to accommodate its clients requests and this makes flexibility of leasing durations possible. These wet leases are typically not a short term deal usually lasting several months to several years. As we have just mentioned, airport database download is something that cannot be dismissed ? or at least should never be ignored. We do understand very well that your situation is really important and matters a great deal. There is a lot, we know, and that is why we are taking a very short break to state a few words about this. In light of all that is offered, and there is a lot, then this is a perfect time to be reading this. The last remaining areas for conversation may be even more important.

Sun Country Airlines is in reorganization after bankruptcy filings, and the future is looking good for continued operations. They are still in business and will continue to be into the future. At this time they will be involved in the reorganization process which is normal for these situations. We have no doubt about their ability to emerge even stronger than before. Sun Country has a long track record of providing first class service and reliable delivery over the years. So those are some of the intangibles that are considered with any company and airline. So we are highly confident that next year, in 2011, will see continued progress toward climbing toward solvency and profitable operations.

Achievements Review ? Call of Duty 4 | COD4 Modern Warfare

Call of Duty 4 has an awesome mix of achievements for the Xbox 360 that work in well with the game.

There are mostly standard achievements that you will unlock while playing through the storyline, and if you?re good, you can unlock additional achievements by playing through each level on Veteran Difficulty. you can also unlock an achievement for completeing the game, and an extra achievement if you did so on Hardened or Veteran difficulty. A great thing about the achievements in Call of Duty 4 is that there are some achievements that require skill, but aren?t so hard to do that you find yourself playing the game repeatedly in certain areas just to unlock the achievement. Examples of this include ?Three of a Kind ? Kill 3 enemies in a row with your knife in the single player campaign?, and ?Daredevil ? Kill an enemy while blinded by a flashbang in the single player campaign.? there are also a few collection achievements: two where you have to search for enemy intel, and one where you must destroy all the TV?s showing Al-Asad?s speech. these achievements help to change the pace of the game a bit, but as always, I would recommend using an Achievement Guide or Strategy Guide as you traverse each mission.

There is nothing completely outstanding about the achievements in Call of Duty 4, but that doesn?t mean that the achievement list isn?t solid. In fact, I?m glad Activision didn?t try to go overboard with difficult achievements, as with many first Person Shooter?s (classic example: F.E.A.R.). overall, you should find unlocking these achievements rewarding, however it could be quite challenging for most everyone to get all of the Veteran Achievements.

Call of Duty 4 has 37 achievements for total of 1000 gamerscore points, all of which can be unlocked in the single player campaign for the Xbox 360.

As It Expands Internationally, Groupon Shakes Up Management, Hires New Head Of Latin America

groupon_logoSince its big IPO last year, Groupon has been picking up the pace of international expansion. Today, for example, we were tipped an email written by Groupon Co-founder and CEO Andrew Mason to Groupon employees, which announced some big changes to international management, specifically in EMEA (Europe, Middle East, and Africa) and Latin America. Regardless of the fact that Groupon scooped up at least six startups since November (including Mertado, Adku, Campfire Labs, Hyperpublic, Kima Labs, and Uptake), taking a look at Groupon's first earnings report as a public company, one will find that the company lost $350 million in 2011 -- not because of marketing or M&A spend -- but because of its "very aggressive international expansion" efforts.

March Madness turns into a big boy's game

This is a different kind of one and done.

Instead of three weeks filled with upsets, small schools and all those other feel-good stories that make March Madness so special, basketball fans only get one this year.

Heading into the second week, the NCAA tournament is now a big boy's game, dominated by a who's who of major college programs.

All but two of the 16 teams in the regional semifinals will be from power conferences. The lone exceptions are Xavier, which is hardly a stranger to this time of year, and Ohio University, a big school with a small, but no longer unknown, basketball program.

According to STATS, this will be the first time since 2003 that 14 teams from the six major conferences have made the Sweet 16. Two of those conferences, the Big Ten and Big East, put four teams each into the round of 16.

"To play in the NCAA tournament is great," said Kansas coach Bill Self, whose Jayhawks are one of two Big 12 teams left in the field. "But to feel the full benefit from an exposure standpoint for your program, you need to get to the second weekend."

The Sweet 16 matchups:

?No. 1 Kentucky vs. No. 4 Indiana and No. 3 Baylor vs. No. 10 Xavier in the South; No. 1 Syracuse vs. No. 4 Wisconsin and No. 2 Ohio State vs. No. 6 Cincinnati in the East; No. 1 North Carolina vs. No. 13 Ohio and No. 2 Kansas vs. No. 11 North Carolina State in the Midwest; and No. 1 Michigan State vs. No. 4 Louisville and No. 3 Marquette vs. No. 7 Florida out West.

Those 14 power-conference teams have a combined 93 Final Four appearances and 33 national titles.

While two No. 2 seeds, Duke and Missouri, fell to 15s Lehigh and Norfolk State in a shocking second round Friday, all four No. 1s got through the first week safely ? the first time that's happened since 2009. A year before that, all four top-seeded teams made it to the Final Four for the only time.

It's possible again this year, though Carolina will have to overcome an injury to a key player to get there.

The Tar Heels defeated Creighton 87-73, but point guard Kendall Marshall broke his right (non-shooting) wrist.

"You can ask any question you want, but I just told you all we know," Tar Heels coach Roy Williams said when announcing the injury. "We do not know anything else."

Though there are few truly small teams left in this year's draw ? such as the Butlers and VCUs and George Masons that have crashed the Final Four over the last decade ? there will be three squads bringing double-digit seeds to the final 16.

The list starts with No. 11 North Carolina State, the program that pretty much set the standard for March Madness upsets and gave us one of the most memorable moments in college sports: Coach Jim Valvano running around the floor at The Pit, looking for someone to hug after Lorenzo Charles grabbed Dereck Whittenburg's air ball and put it in at the buzzer for an upset over powerhouse Houston.

That was in 1983.

In 2012, the Wolfpack snuck in as one of the last at-large teams to make the field. On Sunday, they upset No. 3 Georgetown 66-63 to gain their Midwest Regional matchup against Kansas.

"We always talk about we have such great history at NC State, but it's also time to build some new history," coach Mark Gottfried said.

No. 10 Xavier comes from the Atlantic-10, the closest thing to a power conference without actually being one. This is the fourth Sweet 16 appearance in the last five years for the Musketeers, who made their biggest news this season with an ugly brawl against crosstown rival Cincinnati that led to suspensions and knocked the team out of whack.

"The only guys that know what we went through were the guys who were in the locker room," coach Chris Mack said. "Some would say it's self-inflicted, but I know we have great kids. And I'm really proud of them today."

Then, of course, there's No. 13 Ohio ? enrollment 17,000 but with a basketball program that has, well, basically nothing in common with the state's better-known behemoths who will join them in the Sweet 16 ? Ohio State, Xavier and Cincy.

"I do think our guys have a chip on their shoulder," Ohio coach John Groce said. "I think our guys look forward to playing on the big stage against quality competition."

Welcome to Stetson University: Finance in the Big Apple

Nothing beats knowing pros. Picking their brains. Staying in touch.

Nothing.

That?s one reason the annual trip to New York City?s financial district is so important for students in the Roland George Investment Program, says Justin Hunter, BBA ?10, an analyst for one of the world?s largest banks, the French giant BNP Paribas.

The George Program alumnus who took the trip in 2010 now is one of the growing network of NYC pros with roots in the Lynn Business Center. He was one of several finance alumni who met with students in New York in December.

?While RGIP is the premiere program for hands-on experience, nothing beats picking the brains of industry professionals,? said Hunter, whose advice to students includes three basics for success: ?Network. Network. Network.

?It?s clich?d, but it?s true.?

Greg Serrago, BBA ?09, agrees. A wealth manager at Merrill Lynch Global Wealth Management and another NYC-based George Program alum, Serrago also met with current students in December in New York. Another old piece of wisdom, he said, has been meaningful to him.

?It isn?t always what you know, rather who you know,? he said. It?s particularly applicable to George students because they know so much about finance that they?re experts before graduating. ?I think the networking opportunities that exist during the NY trip are perfect ways to start a student?s professional career.?

?The New York City trip definitely boosted my professional network,? said senior Finance major Thomas Angley of DeBary. His classmate Stephen Swofford, a Finance major from Chicago, said professionals they met informally and at finance firms were congenial, helpful and ?totally open? to answering questions in subsequent contacts.

Some 20 students took the four-day trip led by Dr. K.C. Ma, Roland George Investment Program director and the George Professor of Finance. They visited Harbinger Capital, Bank of New York Mellon, Merrill Lynch Prime Brokerage, the NASDAQ Stock Market, the New York Mercantile Exchange, Bank of America Securities and other financial hot spots.

The purpose of the trip, said Ma, is for students to see how the principles they study in class are practiced in the real world. Every year, numerous George Program graduates step into meaningful financial career work, proving the curriculum?s sound bearing. Many find key connections through New York contacts.

Landing a job in finance can be hard for recent graduates, said Carlos Betancourt, BBA ?08, MBA ?09. The commodities trader who specializes in metals advised students to take full advantage of networking opportunities during the trip. Ask good questions relating to the current state of the market and future investment opportunities to show the ?deep understanding of investment knowledge? for which RGIP members are known.

Networking is a process that takes time to show benefits, said Hunter, who advises persistence. ?Emailing the guy you had dinner with last night is great; staying in touch over time is far more important to gaining the edge with jobs or interviews,? he said.

?Stay hungry? even after landing a job, said Hunter, who mentors younger analysts and interns in his current job.

?I always tell them to ask questions and take notes. It?s incredibly important to show that you?re taking an active roll in the company. Question processes. Question the rationales behind these processes,? and take notes, too, because ?sometimes one slip can create an adverse result.?

During Bruce Springsteen's keynote SXSW speech last night, he disclosed that, like countless artists and musical acts before him, he routinely lifted riffs from his predecessor's songs. So does this mean he's going to get sued by the RIAA for piracy or does that count as fair use? More »

Know What You Are Doing When Buying A Home | Real Estate Blog

Suppose you are moving to a new town because you have just gotten a job there. How do you decide on the area where you want to live? The Chamber of Commerce can be a good place to start. They can give you information about a much wider area and put you in touch with accredited real estate agents. Leasehold Improvements is an area that is just loaded with helpful information, as you just have read. What I have realized is it really just depends on your goals and needs as it relates to your particular situation. There are always some points that will have more of an effect than others. Exactly how they effect what you do is one thing you need to carefully consider. The latter half of our talk will center on a few highly pertinent issues as they concern your possible situation.

If you are considering making an offer on a home, speak to the owner and ask how much the taxes are on the property. Also find out whether those fees have changed at all in the past several years. This will give you a better picture of how much the home will cost you over time.

Try selecting a couple of top-choice properties and looking at them a second time.
After touring them, you should know which properties you would like to live in. Go see them again if they have not been purchased yet. You may be able to see things that you missed the first time and find the one you want.

Location is a big part of the real estate selection process. Look into the surrounding areas as much as you do the features of the home. Find out how much of a distance you are going to have to travel to work. Get information about shopping, law enforcement, hospitals and doctor?s offices, day-care and schools and the traffic and parking to be sure it will be convenient for your family.

We are providing you solid pieces of advice here, but do be aware that some are more critical to understanding www.leaseholdimprovements.org.

But that can vary slightly, and it really just depends on how you want to use the information. Yet you do understand there is much more to be discovered about this. Yet have more big pieces of the overall picture to offer to you, though. It is all about giving information that develops on itself, and we believe you will appreciate that.

Make sure to get an opinion from a home inspector that you trust before you buy a home. Some real estate agents have home inspectors that they work with on a regular basis. The inspector may be able to be bribed into saying the home is in better condition than it truly is.

One important tip when it comes to real estate is to check the history of the area to see if there have been any natural disasters in the past. This can hopefully save you from property damage or loss of life with your home choice. This mainly is a tactic to use when moving to a new and unfamiliar territory. Such occurrences as flooding, wildfires, hurricanes, tornadoes, and earthquakes tend to repeat in the same geographical areas.

When purchasing a rental property, be sure to check out the local rental costs first. Having an idea of how much other properties in the area are renting for can help you to figure out your budget. You?ll have a better idea of what to offer on the house and how much you can budget for upgrades as well.

To get the best value when buying real estate you should start by looking for older homes. In many areas the pricing for the size home is lower than newly built homes and if you have to do repairs or redecorating to make the house more modern you can still save thousands of dollars.

You begin your search by broadly and gradually narrowing its focus. When you find a nice-looking neighborhood close to your new job, take a moment to walk around and get to know the area. Don?t hesitate to strike up conversations with neighbors asking about schools and so on. Once decided, you?ll just need to go to a real estate agent to check out listings in your chosen neighborhood so that you can find the best home for you with the best location! The details in this article really only presents a small fraction of all there is to know about Click here. As usual, you can multiply your efforts when your knowledge is more comprehensive and greater. In just a moment you will be able to encounter the type of related material and expanded points we are talking about. You will be able to evaluate your particular needs as you examine this deeper treatment on this subject.

PFT: Manning wants new deal to match old one

jack_dempsey_ap_wimbley.297183549_stdAP

As expected, the Raiders will part ways with linebacker Kamerion Wimbley, less than a year after signing him to a multi-year deal.

Agent Joe Linta tells PFT that Wimbley has been given the news that he?ll be given his walking papers.

?He?s cut,? Linta said via email.? ?We tried this afternoon to make it work this afternoon, but there were too many constraints with the Raiders cap and cash situation.? [G.M.] Reggie [McKenzie] was a real pro trying to make it work.? Good guy.? Kamerion is going to take the weekend to see which teams may have an interest.?

The move had to happen Friday because if Wimbley were on the roster as of Saturday, an additional $4.5 million in 2012 base salary would have become fully guaranteed, $11 million in full salary guarantee for 2013 would have been triggered, and $2 million of Wimbley?s base salary in 2014 would have become fully guaranteed.

Thus, the Raiders avoiding $17.5 million by cutting Wimbley.

And so he hits the open market, only three days after the market opened.? Don?t be surprised if he lands with the Chiefs.? Coach Romeo Crennel drafted Wimbley in 2006, when Crennel was head coach of the Browns.

UPS says TNT talks continue, plans bid

(AP) ? U.S. delivery company United Parcel Service Inc. says it is still in talks to buy Dutch-based TNT Express NV and plans a formal bid by May 12.

TNT, Europe's second-largest express delivery company, rejected an "informal" offer by UPS of ?9 per share on Feb. 17, which valued the company at around $6.4 billion (?4.9 billion). TNT shares opened Friday at ?9.229.

The talks were disclosed on the eve of TNT reporting a large fourth quarter loss.

UPS said Friday talks were "constructive."

TNT managers have a large incentive to strike a deal: there are no other bidders, and if UPS walks away, they will be left explaining to shareholders why they turned down the initial offer, which was 42 percent above the share price at the time.

TNT's annual meeting is April 11.

ARTICLES MANIAC ? Stand Up Paddleboard for Exercise

Even even though it is fair to say that there are no precise rules when it comes to surfing etiquette, there are a number of unspoken recommendations that (practically) all surfers follow. These recommendations are in spot to make sure the safety of surfers as well as increase the enjoyment of the sport. They basically revolve around being properly mannered when on the water and respecting your fellow surfers. Let?s take a appear at some of them and why they are in location.

Rule No1 ? Don?t Drop In If you are the closest surfer to a wave it?s yours to surf. If not, leave it. Dropping in on an individual else?s wave is extremely inconsiderate and won?t win you any close friends. Not only is it inconsiderate but if a different surfer has already began to ride a wave when you drop in it could cause a poor accident ? if in doubt, leave the wave and wait for the next 1 to come along.

Rule No2 ? Don?t Snake This rule is quite similar to the one particular above. Snaking generally signifies paddling around one more surfer in order to get to the front of the queue for the ideal wave. This once more is incredibly disrespectful and will not go down nicely with your fellow surfers. Think about how you would really feel if you?d been waiting for ages only to have someone else paddle about you and steal your wave. If you can see somebody has been waiting for a although to catch a wave let them have it and wait your turn.

Rule No3 ? Preserve a Hold of Your Board There could be times on the water when you feel the need to let go of your board having said that attempt and limit this as substantially as possible. Surf boards are big and heavy and can easily seriously hurt somebody when not kept below control. Attempt and be aware of your fellow surfers and do not do anything that could harm them in any way.

Rule No4 ? Know Your Location Whilst this doesn?t sound incredibly nice you should really be mindful of the reality that experienced surfers

With spring planting season on the horizon, scientists are planting the seeds of healthier oils for cooking French fries, fried chicken and other fried items prepared in restaurants and other settings in the foodservice industry. Those seeds of new types of heart-healthy soybean, canola and sunflower oils are the topic of an article in the current edition of Chemical & Engineering News (C&EN), the weekly newsmagazine of the American Chemical Society, the world's largest scientific society.

In the article, C&EN Senior Business Editor Melody M. Bomgardner explains that roughly 22 billion pounds of vegetable oils are used for food making in the U.S. each year. So-called partially hydrogenated vegetable oils, which can extend products' shelf-lives, were widely used in preparing restaurant foods such as french fries, as well as snack foods and baked goods since the early 1900s. But mounting evidence in the 1990s showed that these oils are not healthful because of the trans fats that are formed in their production. Trans fats increase the risk of heart disease by raising levels of "bad" cholesterol and lowering levels of "good" cholesterol.

By the time the Food and Drug Administration began requiring food manufacturers to list trans fats on their labels in 2006, Dow and DuPont were already exploring alternatives. The companies plan to launch new seeds that promise oilseed crops with healthier fat content in 2013. Dow's Plenish soybean was genetically engineered, while DuPont's Nexera canola and sunflower were produced through plant breeding. Both companies' products have high amounts of oleic acid, which has been shown to be much more heart-healthy than partially hydrogenated oils. The first target market for these "high-oleic" oils is fried foods, where they can be reused more often than current oils, resulting in a 40 percent cost savings to the food industry. Companies are still working on similar products that could replace shortenings used for baked goods.

Dangers in angel investing

Angel investors are funding much of the current startup boom, but startups should do their homework before signing over equity.

From left: Paul Sloan, Paige Craig, Naval Ravikant, David Tisch

(Credit:
James Martin, CBS Interactive)

With so many millionaires minted by companies like PayPal, Google, and now Facebook, angel investing has become a big deal, particularly in tech. But some of the more seasoned investors are apprehensive about participation from newcomers.

Investors Paige Craig, David Tisch, and Naval Ravikant discussed the topic of angel investing in a panel led by CNET executive editor Paul Sloan. The group agreed that many investors have no business investing.

According to Ravikant, there are, ?too few sophisticated investors,? and he?d know. As the founder of AngelList, a network that connects startups with angel investors, he?s vetted thousands of would-be angel investors.

In just two years, the site has grown to 3,500 active angels, but that?s nothing compared with how many have been rejected. Ravikant said that more than 8,000 potential investors have been turned away from participating on AngelList.

Tisch feels that there are a number of investors currently operating who are outright predatory. These individuals take substantial equity in their investments but provide very little worth to the startups. The issue here is that angel investing is unlike traditional venture capital.

Companies take investments from angels not just because they need operating capital, angels are often former entrepreneurs with valuable insights and connections. When a startup and an angel team up, the ideal relationship sees the angel providing guidance and connections in addition to money.

Tisch sees a lot of investments. He serves as managing director for TechStars New York, an accelerator launched in 2011 under the TechStars umbrella. TechStars takes a 6 percent stake in a startup for $100,000 and three months in one of its four accelerator programs across the U.S.

Many would say that the value comes more from participation in the accelerator than from the $100,000. TechStars dispels any predatory notions by offering an equity-back guarantee. If a startup participates and doesn?t feel that it?s gotten value from the program, TechStars will return the 6 percent of equity.

While Craig believes that there are indeed a number of carpetbaggers taking advantage of needy startups, the onus really falls on the companies. Startups might not always do the necessary due diligence when seeking cash. Which seems logical, but first time entrepreneurs seldom have experience taking money from strangers. But he says that there?s an easy solution for that.

When his company BetterWorks was pursuing capital, his team and his investors spent a lot of time together to make sure the relationship made sense. ?It?s important to actually understand your investors,? said Craig. ?Take money from investors who you want to hang out with.?

Jumbo thrill-seekers of the Caribbean

Low flying jumbo jets are the main attraction at Maho Beach, where hundreds of tourists put themselves in the path of landing and departing airplanes.

By Gary G. Yerkey,?Correspondent / March 6, 2012

? A local, slice-of-life story from a Monitor correspondent.

?Hundreds of thrill-seeking tourists ?ock to Maho Beach on this Caribbean island every day ? not to sunbathe or swim but to put themselves deliberately (and insanely, some say) in the path of low-?ying jumbo jets. For them, spending the day reaching for the underbelly of a Boeing 757 or other such aircraft as it streaks overhead to land at the island?s international airport is their idea of fun in the sun.

Veteran plane-spotters, in fact, say there is no place quite like it: a beautiful, white sandy beach at the end of a runway where the local hangout ? the Sunset Beach Bar and Grill ? posts the arrival and departure times of aircraft on a surfboard and broadcasts radio transmissions between pilots and the control tower.

For the pilots of these monster jets, ?ying low into the airport is necessary to ensure? touching down as close to the end of a short runway (7,546 feet) as possible. That may seem dangerous. But no major incident has been reported in the long history of what has been called the world?s scariest airport.

Planes that land, however, must also take off. And that?s where the danger comes in.

Holding on to the fence for dear life as the powerful jet engines rev up for takeoff, tourists routinely ignore a nearby sign warning that ?jet blast? from departing aircraft ?can cause severe physical harm resulting in extreme bodily harm and/or death.?

But for these thrill-seekers, it?s just another day at the beach.

Ron Paul's pointless Internet presidency

Four years ago, the shrewdest presidential candidates used YouTube, MySpace, Facebook and a dash of Twitter. They also tried to gain a strange new psychic edge called?in the contrived conceit of the day?"mindshare in the blogosphere." Apps were nowhere in campaign strategies. The iPhone was new. The iPad didn't exist.

So who e-campaigned best last time? During Super Tuesday week in 2008, Garlik, a British firm that monitors digital reputations, ranked the day's presidential candidates by online popularity. It didn't take Nate Silver or that Zogby person to call the winner. If you hung around social media even a little, you knew the fix was in.

It wasn't Hillary Clinton. Nor Mitt Romney, John McCain or Barack Obama. Blowing them all away?sealing for himself, in fact, the Presidency of the United Cyberstates of Digital America, commander-in-chief of the Information-Wants-To-Be-Free World?was, naturally, Congressman Ronald Ernest "Ron" Paul.

Ron Paul, President of the Internet! Hail to the online chief! Four more years!

Ron Paul. Elfin ob-gyn goldbug. Ayn Randian. Foe of war, abortion and government. Texan. Rejector of Medicaid, rejector of Medicare. Climate-change skeptic. Keeper of odd company. Espouser of tendentious views.

In 2012, he's still kicking back in the Online Oval Office. Ron Paul, commanding the mad and visible support of somebody. Sure he doesn't fare so well with actual flesh-and-blood voters of majority age who are motivated to drive gas-burning cars and appear with their laminated IDs at three-dimensional voting booths. But you can't have everything.

Big online, small in the real world?

Tim Hwang, a researcher of online movements and memes and the managing director of the Web Ecology Project, says that Ron Paul illustrates a fact we often overlook: "The Internet is not coterminous with the real world." He told me by email, "Like in a rearview mirror communities can be smaller than they appear on the Internet: discussion is often subject to parties who are loudest and can rally the most participants to appear online and participate at that specific moment."

This time around, for Paul, the Internet rally seems to have been sound and fury signifying little.Paul's big hopes for Alaska, Idaho and North Dakota were dashed on Super Tuesday, and he has yet to score a victory in a single contest in this election.

However, he's still logging mindshare in the blogosphere.

So how does he do it? Paul, for all his flat, engineer-like charisma, hardly seems like a Julian Assange mastermind, able to bend the Internet to his Machiavellian hacker will. Instead, it seems the President of the Internet just got lucky.

"I was on YouTube looking for some sort of guitar video or something," an ardent supporter of Ron Paul told PBS a while back, by way of explaining how he came to his candidate years ago. He had stumbled on a Paul propaganda video: "Ron Paul: A New Hope." "He was just speaking truth," concluded the guiter-vid-hunter. A Paulian was born.

And then: lots more Paulians were born. Pop pop pop?everyone on the Web was for Ron Paul! Or so it seemed. They all seemed to have those punk RE/ EVOL /UTION stencils and theories about fiat money. And if a blogger in those days dared to criticize Congressman Paul for, say, taking money from card-carrying neo-Nazis or claiming authorship of a newsletter that talked smack about, oh, black people ("I think we can safely assume that 95 percent of the black males in [Washington, D.C.] are semi-criminal or entirely criminal") she was roundly creamed by organized commenters.

I know, because this happened to me. I'd give a link to my interrogation of the Paul scene from the waning days of 2007, but it doesn't exist. My editor at the New York Times fully expunged the record after hundreds of Paulians swarmed the site?like bacteria or antibodies?and sowed the comments section with vitriol.

The complete retraction delighted the Paulians. And to their credit, Paulians can bring the bombast. Lew Rockwell, the "anti-state, anti-war, pro-market" blogger wrote ominously at the time: "Those who?smear Ron Paul?will live to regret it." He went on: "MSM, here are the new rules: no lying, no ridiculing, no suppressing. Remember 'journalistic ethics'? You really have no choice. The Internet rules."

A victory for Ron Paul would be a victory for the Internet, then, and in theory that victory would be a victory for people?anti-statist, libertarian people, the normal kind who have grave doubts about paper money and spooky conceptions of the Federal Reserve Bank.

Limited, but organic and real

The grassroots support Paul lavishly enjoys is either illusory?"astroturfing" by a campaign determined to make its marketing initiatives seem organic?or real.

Most observers feel it is real, as far as it goes. Hwang doesn't believe the campaign is funded well enough even to seed all the user-generated Paul propaganda that's out there.

Zephyr Teachout, the Fordham legal scholar who organized Howard Dean's online campaign, has said that where most campaigns make "Stepford" Web sites that aim to control a candidate's brand, as Coke or Apple would, Ron Paul's sites, many of them made by fans and not PR firms, look like places where anyone can belong and contribute.

Paulians, Teachout says, do not endeavor to meet the candidate, which would be costly for the campaign. Instead, they content themselves with meeting one another?online and in live meetups. Thus convened, they figure out clever ways to engineer shows of online force.

Some of Paul's most ardent supporters are sui generis, including Trevor Lyman, an Internet music entrepreneur and Ron Paul superfan. In 2008, Lyman abandoned a lifetime of political apathy to throw in with Paul, whose opposition to the war in Iraq appealed to him.

Though he's now not on the campaign's payroll, and has had very limited contact with the candidate?no tete-a-tete flights in Gulfstreams to discuss pet issues?Lyman is credited with having staged the campaign's biggest fundraising initiatives (many of them Internet-driven "moneybombs"). He also co-owns a for-profit company that flies blimp advertising Ron Paul for President in 2012. Giving money to Lyman's company is one way for donors to do an end-run around the federal contribution limit of $2,500, per election, to a candidate.

Getting around limitations imposed by government or big business is second nature to digital natives like Lyman who are the right age to have grown up getting music and movies from Napster and BitTorrent. Ron Paul's politics are a natural fit with the frontiersman ideology that drives longtime users of the Internet?especially the pure-hearted ones, trained in the 1990s, who can code, develop online projects, create and curate user-generated content and start digital initiatives. They also happen to be the ones who don't expect money for their labors.

For now, they have only one problem as a support base. There are not enough of them. Ron Paul has about 900,000 Facebook likers, almost precisely the number of votes he has received this election, which he is not?you heard it here first?going to win.
