An Optional SAT: What Does this Mean for the ... - Education Closet

Today?s guest post comes from our friend, Jesse Langley, who appeared here on the break between Christmas and New Years. ?We welcome him back with this thought-provoking conversation piece on the place of the arts in our changing educational landscape.

With several new studies surfacing regarding the use of SAT scores for college admission, it?s not surprising that many liberal arts colleges in the U.S. News & World Report list of top 100 colleges are now offering test score-optional submissions. Almost 900 schools are now on the SAT optional list. For schools that specialize in the arts, evaluating a student based on his or her SAT score may not be the most effective way to measure that student?s creative talent.

A new look at standardized testing

The key issue for many colleges and universities that choose to move away from the SAT has to do with standardization: while standardized testing can help schools determine which students will be able to adjust to a more rigorous and focused academic program, it can also serve as a blind spot for other strengths and abilities. Making tests like the SAT optional can give students the choice to use other methods, such as essays, creative projects and interviews to showcase their talents.

In addition to top liberal arts colleges, many?online degree programs don?t require SAT scores and take a generally unorthodox approach to higher education. For students who thrive on freedom and autonomy, these alternative colleges can be a solid option for earning a degree while balancing personal responsibilities. Since every student has unique gifts and talents, the diversity of higher education opportunities is a great way to incorporate the variety of skills found among students.

Alternatives to the SAT??Students can easily be ?left behind? by the SAT because no portion of the test measures creative or artistic abilities. A math wiz can show off his or her talent, just as an excellent writer can evidence his or her ability. These subject areas, however, fail to address the wide variety of talent that naturally and expectedly exists in every high school. ??Many schools that allow optional standardized test score submissions often require, or offer substitutions for, a test score. This gives students the opportunity to submit a portfolio of artwork or a video that expresses their creative talents. Colleges and universities who offer these kinds of options also benefit from a more diverse student body and a faculty that can be encouraged to try new teaching and learning methods.

The future of admissions

Alternatives to SAT score submissions also allow admissions officials to evaluate students on a more personal level. Numbers have a way of dehumanizing individuals and make it very difficult to properly assess the positive effect a student might bring to the school. Although it may be more challenging for admissions officials to objectively critique artistic submissions, doing so will be a step in the right direction.???As SAT scores primarily cater to future evaluations of the school itself, this new trend in optional score submissions can revolutionize the way top schools in the country are measured. This is not to say that standardized test score submissions should be abolished completely; many students perform exceptionally well on the test and should be recognized for their success. There simply are other tools to evaluate intellect and capability. Thankfully, liberal arts colleges are discovering this and seem to be benefiting from the change.

When the Icelandic banking system was privatised in 2003, it inaugurated a period of furious expansion of both loans and risky investments. The bubble burst in 2008. At that time, the nominal assets of the three largest banks was 14 times bigger than Iceland's entire GDP.

The crash shook Icelandic society to its foundations with mass bankruptcy, drastic increases in unemployment, loss of savings, increased indebtedness and raised taxes. Deteriorating health care and emigration of highly educated people are other consequences that will affect Iceland for a long time to come.

At the same time, the banks emphasized their social responsibility for sustainable development. During their brief heyday, they invested in sponsoring a number of sporting and cultural events everything from opera and concerts to marathons, and even a chess club.

This is a type of positive social commitment that creates goodwill for companies and actually goes hand in hand with their PR strategies, argues David Sigurthorsson, doctoral student in Applied Ethics at Linkping University and himself an Icelander. His analysis has been published in an article in the Journal of Business Ethics.

He demonstrates the confusion reigning around what CSR corporate social responsibility actually means. Most of the good that companies do can be put here. CSR can, however, be roughly divided into positive and negative obligations. The negative ones amount to refraining from harmful behaviour, for example production that destroys the environment, and violations of human rights. In the case of the banks, it would have been managing depositors' money responsibly.

The positive obligations are supporting social activities in society. They are more visible, and can be more easily combined with the company's own PR operations. Negative obligations deal with how the company makes its profit; the positive are how a portion of that is spent.

Companies often prefer the positive commitments over the negative, and they gladly invest in a type of corporate philanthropy, Sigurthorsson argues. This applies to the three Icelandic banks as well, all of which emphasized the importance of social commitments in their ethical programmes. Both Landsbanki and Glitnir Bank wrote that sponsorship is important, and Kaupthing indicated charitable activities, education, culture, and sport as sectors to support.

Small investments here yielded large dividends. Sigurthorsson compares the significantly larger sums the banks spent on their guests and fishing and sporting trips, as well as gifts, for them. Kaupthing, for example, spent over ISK 580 million (EUR 3.5 million) on its guests between 2004 and 2008, compared with ISK 107 million (EUR 656,000) on external sponsorship.

At the same time the banks sponsored a number of events, they managed socially harmful and in certain cases criminal operations with their aggressive loan and investment policies. Sigurthorsson asks himself whether the trust the banks built up actually became an obstacle to stronger regulation and supervision of their operations.

False trust was created, both with the public and politicians; they felt the banks were being responsible. This reduced the demand for transparency, and the pressure for harder legislation.

The contents of CSR should be better defined and tied to responsible operations the things associated with negative obligations, he concludes.

This is one of the many lessons we should learn from the Icelandic banking crisis, he adds as a final remark.

Colombia's FARC announces halt to kidnapping

(AP) ? Colombia's main rebel group said Sunday it is abandoning the practice of kidnapping and will soon free its last remaining "prisoners of war," 10 security force members held for as long as 14 years.

The leftist Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, announced on its website that it would no longer kidnap civilians "for financial ends," marking the first time the rebels have unequivocally renounced a tool they have long employed against Colombia's well-heeled.

It is not clear whether an order has been given to release ransom-kidnapping victims currently held by the rebels, whose number is not known.

The FARC did not provide a date for the liberation of the 10 security force members, two fewer than the government says it holds.

Sunday's announcement could advance prospects for a peace dialogue sought by the rebels. The government has insisted the FARC end all kidnappings as a minimal first step.

The rebels did not say, however that they were was abandoning hostilities. The FARC has recently stepped up hit-and-run attacks and the military blames it for bombings and mortar attacks on two police posts in the past month that killed 15 people and wounded nearly 100, most of them civilians.

President Juan Manuel Santos responded to Sunday's statement positively but cautiously via Twitter.

"We value the FARC's announcement that it is renouncing kidnapping as an important and necessary, if insufficient, step in the right direction," he said.

In the 1990s, kidnappings by the FARC or by criminal gangs that sold the abducted to the rebels helped make Colombia the world's kidnapping capital. Rural highways became perilous scenes of "miracle fishing" by laptop-toting rebels who employed chamber of commerce databases at roadblocks to identify the wealthy.

Weakened by military pressure, the rebels have been hard pressed to house and feed hostages.

The FARC has been releasing captives piecemeal since early 2008, and some have been rescued by the military in operations such as the daring ruse that July that won freedom for a group including Ingrid Betancourt and three U.S. military contractors.

As defense minister from 2006-2009, Santos oversaw operations that struck major blows to the FARC and led to unprecedented rebel desertions.

Since he took office in 2010, Colombia's military has tracked down and killed the rebels' two top leaders.

Santos has insisted on a halt to kidnapping as a minimal condition for peace talks that the FARC is seeking.

The FARC, which has about 9,000 fighters, said it was revoking a "law" its general staff approved in 2000, when Colombia's government ceded a Switzerland-sized swath of the country to the rebels for peace talks that failed two years later.

There was no halt in FARC hostilities during those talks and they collapsed after the rebels' high-profile kidnap of a lawmaker, Jorge Eduardo Gechem, who was held for six years before being released as a goodwill gesture.

Gechem was among the last political hostages freed by the FARC.

It is not known how many civilians the rebels currently hold ? the government does not provide figures ? but analysts say FARC revenues from ransom kidnappings now represent only a sliver of income for a group whose main revenue source is the cocaine trade.

Colombia's anti-kidnapping police said the FARC kidnapped 72 people during the first 11 months of 2011.

The director of the citizen's group Pais Libre, Olga Lucia Gomez, said it estimates that at least 500 Colombians are currently being held for ransom, with the FARC and the country's No. 2 rebel band, the National Liberation Army, or ELN, among those holding victims.

The FARC's fronts are spread all around Colombia and tend to operate with relative autonomy so it was not clear whether Sunday's announcement would mean the immediate release of civilians they currently hold for ransom.

The rebels announced on Dec. 27 that they would free six security force members but said a month later that they were delaying the release because of a government "militarization" of the area where the release was planned.

Brazil, which has provided the International Red Cross with helicopters in past FARC liberations, subsequently agreed to help arrange the release.

The December announcement came a month after the FARC executed three police officers and one soldier because army troops apparently happened upon their jungle camp.

Latin America's last major rebel movement, the FARC was founded in 1964. The United States and European Union consider it a terrorist organization.

In the 1980s, the FARC's kidnappings and extortion led wealthy ranchers and drug lords to create private far-right militias that evolved into the criminal gangs known as paramilitaries.

Stevens Point Brewery Investing $1 Million into Expansion ...

New equipment will increase brewing capacity to keep up with demand

STEVENS POINT, WI - For the third time in three years, Stevens Point Brewery is expanding its production capacity to keep up with demand.

The latest expansion ? a $1.1 million project includes nine new fermentation tanks, two new bright beer tanks, a new 7,000-gallon hot water tank and a centrifuge for filtering finished beer. When all of the new equipment is up and running this spring, the brewery will be able to brew 120,000 barrels of beer annually, a 20% increase.

Since 2009 the Stevens Point Brewery has invested approximately $1.5 million in new equipment and additional storage space to increase capacity and improve efficiency, according to Joe Martino, Stevens Point Brewery Operating Partner.

?Last year we added 6,600 square feet of warehouse space, five aging tanks and three fermentation tanks to bring our brewing capacity up to 100,000 barrels per year,? Martino said. ?In 2010, we built a 2,700-square-foot addition to expand our keg cooler room and add four aging tanks.

?We have our loyal customers to thank for our continued success, and as our sales continue to grow, we?ll continue to expand our capacity to keep up with the demand,? Martino added. ?We?ve still got plenty of room to grow and we fully intend to do so.?

The two new bright beer tanks for package release beer will allow Point Brewmasters Gabe Hopkins and John Zappa and their team of Brewing Operators to brew six days per week instead of five. The 120-barrel tanks, which hold finished beer ready for the bottle and can lines, will be installed by the end of February.

The nine new fermentation tanks scheduled to be installed in late March are vertical fermentation ?unitanks? and represent a first for the Stevens Point Brewery, according to Hopkins. ?Our new vertical tanks are twice as tall as they are wide, and they?re called unitanks because they allow us to ferment and age beer all in one vessel,? he explained. ?Vertical tanks also enable improved dry hopping of our beer. Traditional fermenters are horizontal and can be used for either fermenting or aging, but not both in the same tank.?

The centrifuge, which will arrive in April, will help improve beer quality and production efficiencies. ?We will be able to filter beer faster and improve the quality of our product in the package,? Hopkins said.

The new hot water tank will be used to heat water at the beginning of the brewing process and will be the first piece of new equipment to be installed, in mid-February.

PFT: CB Routt expected to pick his new team soon

137839040_crop_650x440Getty Images

As the NFL continues to grow, it?s presence in Green Bay becomes more unique.? The small-market, publicly-owned team has thrived on the field for much of the last two decades, even as the sport has exploded to new levels of revenue and sophistication.

But the balance between a community feel and a corporate attitude can be difficult to strike, as Pete Dougherty and Rob Demovsky of the Green Bay Press-Gazette write in an new article that explores the manner in which recent changes to the organization could affect its long-standing ties to the city and the people who live there.

?[I]n the arms race for revenue, the Packers must remain rooted in the small community that spawned the team and has kept it alive through sometimes dire financial times for the last 93 years,? Dougherty and Demovsky write.

An eventual disconnect between the team and the community could have dire consequences.? One unnamed source tells Dougherty and Demovsky that, if a local stadium referendum had failed in 2000, the Packers would have moved by now.? ?If you don?t have the right players on the board and in management, there aren?t going to be an awful lot of people that will work to save [the team],? the source said.

That seems like a bit of a stretch.? With a season-ticket waiting list that extends for decades, the public in Green Bay will vote in favor of whatever needs to be done to help the team survive, and thrive, in the only hometown its ever known.

As to the tension between the community and the front office, which given the recent resignation of Jason Weid doesn?t have a Wisconsin native in one of the top two jobs with the organization, Dougherty and Demovsky point to the relationship between the team and its Hall of Fame, an independent body run by local cirizens.? When the team recently suggested taking over the Hall of Fame, its executive committee and board of directors were reportedly ?outraged.?

?The franchise has to be careful it doesn?t get too big and think, ?We don?t need people,?? an NFL source with ties to the Packers said.? ?If they lose sight of that and think everything?s hunky-dory here and [think] ?We don?t have to worry about that,? that?s an enormous mistake.? [There?s been] a connection with this team and community literally from Day 1 in 1919, and there?s not another community-team relationship like this in any sport.? Not just the National Football League, in any sport.? That?s to be treasured and is part of the unique tradition, and has to be honored.?

But the reality is that folks in Green Bay ultimately want to see the team win.? Though there may be grumbling (especially when the team isn?t winning, which doesn?t happen all that often anymore), the fans ultimately will defer to the folks who run the team.? At some point there could be a grassroots effort to hire new management, but the fans never will turn their back on the franchise.

And for that reason the franchise will continue to compete, even as the dollars get bigger and the business concepts become more convoluted.

Disadvantages Of Charge Card Debt Consolidation Financial loans ...

Charge card has turned into a necessity nowadays for many people. The reason being the majority of us live from salary to salary, which hardly leaves us with anything to invest on other trivial things. Its as an easy loan facility, which you?ll pay back whenever later, leisurely. However, soon we understand we?ve gathered enough debt, and that we are sinking further in to the debt hole. If you can?t pay back the borrowed funds, you might be caused to file for for private personal bankruptcy.

Whenever you think it is impossible to pay back your financial troubles, charge card debt consolidation financial loans will help you get free from it. However, you will find several disadvantages of utilizing these types of services. Allows take a look at a number of them.

Lower Amount Borrowed

Generally, consolidation financial loans are unsecured. Hence, they amount these businesses lend you?d be reduced than the usual guaranteed loan with collateral. Goliath new Samsung Note phone causes rift amongst gadget junkies (Yahoo! News)

Tech lovers split over whether 5.3-inch Galaxy Note is just too much phone

When?Apple introduced the iPhone way back in 2007, many consumers with tiny-screened feature phones wondered why they would ever need a huge 3.5" screen on a mobile device. Fast forward to 2012, and almost every new?Android handset to hit the market pushes display size past the 4" barrier, and?smartphone users have seemingly grown accustomed to lugging widescreen hardware with them wherever they go.

Samsung ? the company behind the 4.65" Galaxy Nexus?? has no problem pushing the envelope, and that's exactly what it did with the Galaxy Note. Sporting an almost laughable 5.3" screen, the gigantic 4G LTE phone could easily be mistaken for a tablet, and even Samsung's own marketing suggests it's meant to occupy both spaces. Its display is 51% bigger than the iPhone's, making it a challenge to hold for those with modestly-sized mitts.

The Note's split personality has also seemingly split the gadget community over how big is too big when it comes to a phone. Some of those who have laid their hands on it, including?Tecca's own Taylor Hatmaker, are delighted with with the new tablet phone hybrid. In Hatmaker's own words: "The heavily marketed new member of the ever-growing Galaxy family is a 5.3" experiment in cross-breeding a phone and a tablet, and I for one really enjoyed the result."

Is the Note more to love, or just too big?And she's not alone. Engadget's Tim Stevens?boasts "It's a device with a lot to love and is the kind of phone that would make almost every Android aficionado swoon."

But not everyone is on board with the trend toward massive handsets.?Slate's Farhad Manjoo suggests that smaller is better, noting "A larger phone is more trouble to carry around than a small one, it's harder to hold and use with one hand, it usually gets worse battery life, and when you put it up to your ear, you're liable to get swept up by a strong gust."

Jonathan Geller of?Boy Genius Report goes a step further, calling the Galaxy Note the "most useless phone" he's ever used, adding, "The phone is too big. You will look stupid talking on it, people will laugh at you, and you'll be unhappy if you buy it. I really can't get around this, unfortunately, because Samsung pushed things way too far this time."

It seems there isn't much middle ground on this issue; either the Galaxy Note will change your life for the better, or you'll regret ever considering purchasing a phone larger than a slice of pizza. But where do you stand? Is the Galaxy Note on your radar, or is Samsung's new megaphone simply too much to handle? Let us know in the comments!

Venezuela's Capriles seeks to unseat Chavez (Reuters)

CARACAS (Reuters) ? Venezuela's opposition primary winner Henrique Capriles on Monday exuded confidence that he can unseat President Hugo Chavez and end 13 years of socialism that foes say has left the OPEC nation in crisis.

Capriles' campaign got off to a roaring start with an easy victory in the Democratic Unity coalition's vote on Sunday, where high turnout of nearly 3 million showed the opposition can mobilize supporters ahead of the October 7 presidential election.

The 39-year-old center-left state governor maintained his conciliatory bid for unity in a divided Venezuela, but was more combative in criticizing Chavez's state-driven economic model.

"The nationalizations are a complete failure, they made expropriations into a political instrument," said Capriles on Monday during his first news conference after the primary vote.

"This is a government of retrograde leftists," he said, insisting he seeks a Brazilian-style economy with a mix of social assistance and respect for business.

His campaign got a shot in the arm from a show of unity among losing candidates from the opposition, which for years was torn by internal rivalries that ultimately benefited Chavez.

But with Chavez riding high in polls, still popular among the poor and spending massively on welfare projects, Capriles will need to go beyond the vague promises and feel-good factor of his primary campaign if he is to unseat the president.

Parliamentary elections in 2010 showed the nation split down the middle, with Chavez's ruling Socialist Party securing 5.4 million votes against 5.3 million for Democratic Unity.

The president's approval rating has risen to about 60 percent since then, but polls show about a third of voters undecided. To triumph in October, Capriles must win over most of those so called "ni-nis" (neither Chavistas nor opposition).

Capriles' strong showing - taking 62 percent of votes cast in the primary - will please investors, who cheer any news suggesting a change from Chavez's state-centered economic model.

"If the market interprets Capriles' victory as increasing the opposition's chances for October due to a perceived higher-than-expected turnout, Venezuelan asset prices are likely to remain well-supported over the next few weeks," Nomura bank's Boris Segura wrote.

Venezuela's dollar-denominated bonds are among the most highly traded emerging market securities, and on Monday they modestly outperformed their peers. The yield spread over comparable U.S. Treasuries narrowed about 20 basis points, compared to 9 basis points of tightening for the overall benchmark JPMorgan Emerging Markets Bond Index Plus.

NEW FACE

At the forefront of a new guard of young opposition figures, Capriles has cast himself as a fresh face for a nation dominated by Chavez's militant leftism and constant confrontation.

The grandson of Polish fugitives from Nazi persecution, Capriles says he admires Brazil's "modern left" economic model, which has helped pull tens of millions out of poverty through a mix of state spending and respect for private enterprise.

"The government loves talking about revolution. Why don't we drop the 'r' and talk about evolution?" he said on Monday in one of many catchphrases that served him well ahead of the primary.

"I am not a Messiah, I'm a public servant," he added, seeking to make a contrast with Chavez's dominant persona.

Capriles has vowed to address day-to-day concerns of Venezuelans such as high crime, unemployment and constantly rising prices, and spend less time on ideological crusades.

"This is what we were hoping for, a man like Capriles who has the power and responsibility to govern, because Venezuela needs to change," said Leila Sutil, 58, a community organizer.

Capriles says he will maintain the best of Chavez's popular welfare policies, while only gradually dismantling controversial measures that include price and currency controls plus nationalizations of everything from farms to oil refineries .

He has indicated he will steer Venezuela's alliances away from Chavez's faraway, ideologically motivated friendships with Iran, Belarus, Syria and other anti-U.S. governments.

Capriles says he sees no need to cut relations with Cuba, where Chavez has had a particularly close relationship with the communist government, but says future ties must be transparent.

It will be a hard sell, however, to convince voters in rural backwaters and urban slums who have been won over in the past by Chavez's potent combination of fierce nationalism, abundant charisma and huge welfare spending.

Heavy on generalizations, Capriles' victory speech showed his public style is still far behind the loquacious Chavez, who recently delivered a record-breaking speech of nearly 10 hours.

State media immediately labeled the governor as "the right wing candidate," and deputy foreign minister Temir Porras sniped at Capriles via Twitter.

"The guy may have won the primaries, but he's so lacking in charisma, it's not going to be easy for him," Porras said.

Mountain Maladies: Genetic Screening Susses Out Susceptibility to Altitude Sickness

PEAK CONDITION: Soldiers fighting in mountainous regions often succumb to altitude sickness. So do cows in the Rockies, thousands of which die every summer. Now, scientists are working on genetic tests for altitude sickness susceptibility. Image: Chris 73, Wikimedia Commons

On his 27th birthday, David Hillebrandt and his wife Sally began to climb Mount Kenya, the second-highest mountain in Africa after Kilimanjaro. Instead of gearing up and heading straight for the mountain's tallest peak?which reaches 5,199 meters?the couple started their journey more leisurely, trekking through scenic ridges and valleys around the mountain at an altitude of about 3,000 meters.

David, who today serves as a medical advisor to the British Mountaineering Council, already had considerable climbing experience at the time: he had scaled a 5,790-meter peak in Pakistan and 3,960-meter peaks in the European Alps. Sally, in contrast, had never done any serious climbing and did not consider herself a mountaineer.

But Sally wasn't the one who needed to stop and turn around.

"I am meant to be this tough, rugged mountaineer," David says, "and I celebrated my birthday by throwing up all over the place." Plagued by a throbbing headache and relentless nausea, David retreated to lower ground. He knew from previous climbs that he was prone to altitude sickness, but he thought circling the mountain at 3,000 meters would be a good way to acclimatize. This time it didn't do the trick. Even though she was a far less experienced climber, Sally adjusted to the altitude much faster.

It wasn't experience that made the difference?it was genetics. Scientists have known for awhile that some people are inherently more susceptible to altitude sickness than others?and that this susceptibility is heritable?but only now are they on the trail of the culprit genes. Preliminary studies suggest that a group of six genes predicts who will get altitude sickness with greater than 90 percent accuracy. Such a precise genetic test would greatly benefit the military, which currently has no way of predicting which soldiers will fall ill when flown to high altitudes and would rather not waste money on expensive acclimatization drugs. In a parallel research effort, scientists have been searching for the genes that determine which cows develop altitude sickness, also known as brisket disease, when they graze in the Rocky Mountains. Because tens of thousands of cows die in the western U.S. from brisket disease annually, ranchers would like nothing more than to strip the responsible genes from the breeding population.

Written in blood
The pursuit of a genetic test for altitude sickness began in earnest a few years ago in Robert Roach's laboratory at the University of Colorado. In 2010, 28 people in Roach's lab ascended to an altitude of 4,875 meters without ever leaving the ground. Roach placed his volunteers in a large metal box called a hypobaric chamber and gradually sucked out air with a vacuum pump, reducing atmospheric pressure to mimic a high altitude, low-oxygen environment. Roach purposefully recruited a mixture of people who were susceptible to altitude sickness and people who had never had problems in high climes. As expected, about half of the 28 volunteers felt sick in the chamber, whereas the others felt fine.

Roach took samples of his volunteers' blood, isolated their DNA and programmed a computer to search for genetic differences between the people who got sick and those who didn't mind hanging out in thin air. The program identified six genes that are expressed at unusually high or low levels in people who felt sick; some of the genes are linked to oxygen transport. Looking at the expression levels of those six genes alone was enough to distinguish people who became ill from those who did not with about 95 percent accuracy.

The following year, Roach collaborated with Benjamin Levine of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center to try the rudimentary genetic test on a larger group of volunteers. This time, instead of bringing the mountain to his lab, Roach decided to move his lab to the mountain.

In groups of about 15, Roach and Levine took 140 fit men and women from Dallas to Mount Baldy in Breckenridge, Colo., which is around 4,000 meters above sea level. During their weekend mountain getaway, the volunteers in each group?all of whom had passed the Army Physical Fitness Test?ran 3.2 kilometers, did push-ups and sit-ups, and hiked a trail as fast as they could. A few days earlier, everyone in the group had performed the same exercises at sea level. Altitude made all the difference. "We had some serious athletes in our group, a lot of triathlon people," says Tom Tielleman, 24, a former Eagle Scout. "Everyone did worse on the mountain." Some people did worse than others.

Currently, Roach and Levine are analyzing DNA from the Breckenridge study, searching for the same six genes that Roach identified in the hypobaric chamber study as well as looking for new genetic patterns that discriminate between people whose performance decreased slightly on the mountain and those whose performance worsened dramatically. If they find a strong signature, Roach predicts that they will develop a working genetic test for altitude sickness within a year. The Pentagon, which funds some of Roach's research, wants an easy way to identify soldiers who succumb to altitude sickness when fighting in mountainous regions.

In many cases, the symptoms of altitude sickness are mild and dissipate after a few days. But for some people altitude sickness is not just a minor inconvenience?the headaches, nausea and vomiting are debilitating, making it difficult to stand up or think clearly, let alone fight a war. Some people cough up blood and retain fluid in their lungs as the pressure inside capillaries increases, forcing out water. The U.S. Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine estimates that above 3,000 meters between 25 and 35 percent of soldiers yield to altitude sickness; above 4,000 meters, between 80 and 90 percent of soldiers fall ill. Although there are effective drugs like Diamox (acetazolamide) to prevent and treat altitude sickness, buying drugs in mass quantities for an unknown number of soldiers is expensive and wasteful, and some drugs have unwanted side effects such as blurred vision and excess blood acidity. A genetic test would not help treat altitude sickness, but it would help military leaders strategize, giving the soldiers most likely to get sick more time to acclimatize and thereby reducing the number of medical evacuations.

Bloated bovines
Altitude sickness is also the scourge of entirely different population of mountain-dwellers: cows. By the time a rancher spots one lumbering up and down the mountain, its swollen chest sloshing between its front legs, there is not much he can do except move the animal to a lower altitude and hope it lives. Every summer in the U.S. West?when ranchers take cattle to graze on grassy mountain slopes?tens of thousands of cows die because they cannot adapt to the thin, oxygen-poor air. For the past two years, scientists collaborating with a new research facility at New Mexico State University (N.M.S.U.) in Las Cruces have been searching for the genes that determine which cows develop high altitude sickness, aka brisket disease. Once they find the genes, the idea is to breed them out of the bovine population.

From May to November each year, ranchers in many parts of the western U.S. take their cattle into the mountains where there is more rainfall and more nutritious grass than at lower altitudes?lower oxygen levels notwithstanding. In the Rockies, summer pastures range from 1,500 to 3,650 meters; an altitude greater than 1,500 meters is enough to induce brisket disease. In some parts of Montana and Colorado, cattle graze at altitudes upward of 4,000 meters, says Manny Encinias, director of N.M.S.U.'s Top of the Valle research facility in Valles Caldera National Preserve.

Whereas some cows take the swift transition to high altitudes in stride, others swell up and die. Not all breeds are equally susceptible, nor are all individuals from a single breed?just as human susceptibility to acute mountain sickness varies. Healthy cows respond to low-oxygen environments in a characteristic way: their hearts beat faster to deliver enough oxygenated blood to the body and brain, and blood vessels in the lung constrict to shunt blood to the organ's oxygen-rich areas. Cows that develop brisket disease respond similarly, but their body's compensation is too aggressive for their own good. Blood pressure increases so much that plasma seeps out of the blood vessels into tissues surrounding the heart and lungs, bloating the cows' chests. And blood vessels in the lung constrict so much that the blood backs up into the heart, which eventually gives out. The cows collapse and die from heart failure.

At Top of the Valle, which is nearly 2,600 meters above sea level, researchers are working to pinpoint the exact genes responsible for the physiological differences between a cow that keels over in the mountains and one that remains as lively as Julie Andrews in the Alps.

Ranchers in New Mexico, Texas, Colorado and Utah send their cows to N.M.S.U., where Tim Holt of Colorado State University in Fort Collins slides a catheter through their jugular veins toward their hearts and measures arterial pressure?an indicator of the cow's susceptibility to brisket disease. If tests suggest the cow won't fare well in the mountains, a rancher may avoid a potential loss by selling the cow to a lower-altitude ranch. "It's almost a given that ranchers will lose between 5 and 30 percent of their herd if they send cattle to high country?that's of great economic significance," Holt says. N.M.S.U. says the beef industry loses $60 million annually to high altitude disease. Some ranchers have considered giving cattle drugs designed to treat mountain sickness in people, like acetazolamide, but the FDA has not approved the use of such drugs in animals meant for human consumption.

Even if N.M.S.U. tested all of the nearly one million cows grazing in the Rockies for pulmonary hypertension?high blood pressure in the lungs?it wouldn't solve the brisket problem. When ranchers purchase bull semen for artificial insemination?the most common breeding practice in the Rockies?there is no way to know if the semen contains the undesirable genes responsible for brisket. Furthermore, ranchers risk reintroducing those genes into a population they have already worked to make mountain-friendly through generations of artificial selection. By identifying the responsible genes, scientists give ranchers a way to screen bulls for those genes and eliminate the problem of genetic recontamination.

"If you raise a bull at sea level, you can't figure out his genetic predisposition to high altitude sickness without taking him above 5,000 feet. Our ultimate goal is to take a DNA sample and generate a value: either a concrete 'Yes or No' or a numerical value of genetic merit," explains Jonathan Beever of the University of Illinois at Urbana?Champaign. Beever receives blood samples from N.M.S.U., the DNA in which he analyzes.

"There's always been theories about which breeds and animals are more susceptible," Encinias says. "Now we are trying to objectively quantify it."
