Arizona is back to it's typical winter weather and I am glad! I thought I would freeze before it warmed up again. Gosh, I know I am so spoiled here with some of you really in the cold weather. Here are some pics from last summer I never got around to posting for you. Just a little fun at my house.?

Look what this little guy is up against most days.

?"Hello?! Where are the girls?"

?"Shhhh! We are hiding from the big bad wolf " aka, little guy.

?"I'll just play doctor by myself I guess."

?"Playing house by myself isn't that much fun either; where are those girls?"

The littlest had mercy on him and came out to play. It's not fun to hide when no one is looking for you anyway.
?Alright, all of them are out and it's time for a round of gymnastics practice.

Hey, little guy can do that too :) Finally someone to play with.

I hope you have a great weekend! Thanks for stopping by.

Samsung Electronics chairman wins $4 billion court feud over family fortune

SEOUL (Reuters) - Samsung Electronics Co Ltd Chairman Lee Kun-hee fended off a lawsuit by estranged family members demanding he hand over billions of dollars of shares in Samsung companies as a South Korean court ruled in his favor on Friday.

Lee, 71, and Samsung Everland, a de facto holding company for the country's largest conglomerate, were defending against three lawsuits by Lee's relatives seeking nearly $4 billion in assets in Samsung Life Insurance Co Ltd, which sits at the heart of the web of Samsung group shareholdings, and Samsung Electronics, the group's crown jewel.

The lawsuit was unlikely to have deprived Lee of his control over Samsung Electronics, the world's biggest maker of smartphones, TVs and memory chips.

But a ruling against him would have diluted his holdings and could have forced a reshuffling of the intricate shareholdings across the Samsung group if he were to retain his grip.

It also came at a key juncture for the electronics giant's successions plans, just months after Lee's son Jay Y. Lee, 44, was promoted to vice chairman.

Samsung has come to symbolize the success of South Korea's "chaebol" conglomerates on the global stage, where it is battling Apple Inc and its Galaxy smartphone is outselling the iPhone.

A judge at the Seoul Central District Court ruled that Lee could retain more than $1 billion in Samsung Electronics shares and another $1 billion in shares of Samsung Life.

Samsung Everland, a small zoo operator, was also allowed to keep its $1 billion stake in Samsung Life. Lee will remain Samsung Life's biggest shareholder with a 20.76 percent stake.

The lawsuits accused Lee of hiding from his siblings billions of dollars in shareholdings inherited from his father, Samsung's founder, while Lee countered that as his father's chosen successor, he had free rein to transfer group company shares.

HAPPY TOGETHER?

"This is a totally unexpected ruling and we'll decide whether to appeal after discussing with our clients," Cha Dong-eon, a lawyer for the plaintiffs, told reporters.

Lawyers for Lee, who has been travelling abroad since early January, said the ruling was reasonable.

Shares in Samsung Life closed nearly 3 percent higher after the ruling, while Samsung Electronics sagged 0.5 percent. Seoul's benchmark Kospi fell 0.2 percent.

The trial, which exposed family intrigues behind South Korea's powerful chaebol, coincides with rising public resentment towards the conglomerates, stirred by their dominance in the economy and widening wealth gaps in society.

The ruling comes only a day after Chey Tae-won, chairman of South Korean chaebol company SK Holdings Co Ltd, was sent to prison on embezzlement charges, as the country seeks to level out the playing field between big business groups and the "economically weak".

Lee, South Korea's richest man, was worth an estimated $8.3 billion as of March 2012, according to Forbes Magazine.

He owns less than 4 percent of Samsung Electronics, but through family stakes in Samsung Everland and Samsung Life he exercises substantial control over the electronics firm and the other 80 or so Samsung companies, which operate in industries from construction to hotels to fashion.

The ownership of hidden assets came into focus in 2011, after a tax probe into Lee that followed the transfer of shares from nominee accounts to his own name. He was later indicted on tax evasion charges but pardoned by South Korean President Lee Myung-bak.

South Korea is no stranger to the family feuds that have engulfed other Asia dynasties such as India's Ambani family. Hyundai Group, once the biggest of the chaebol, split into two after a row between two brothers, one side becoming Hyundai Motor Co and the other Hyundai Group.

Before delivering his verdict, the judge said he wished for a happy ending to the family dispute.

"Regardless of the truth of what happened or the final outcome of this case, I think it may also have been one of the late founder's wishes that both parties have a happy life together with no quarrels," the judge said.

BOONVILLE, Mo. (AP) ? For decades, Anheuser-Busch has used its famous Clydesdales in Super Bowl ads for Budweiser. The latest star is barely two weeks old.

A foal born Jan. 16 at Anheuser-Busch's Warm Springs Ranch near the mid-Missouri town of Boonville is featured in an ad that will appear in Sunday's game between the NFC champion San Francisco 49ers and AFC champion Baltimore Ravens.

The 60-second ad chronicles the bond a Clydesdale foal shares with his trainer. The foal was just a week old when the ad was filmed.

It marks the 23rd Super Bowl ad featuring the Clydesdales.

Budweiser recently launched its first-ever Twitter account, using the occasion to tweet the first photo of the newborn.

Diabetes distresses bone marrow stem cells by damaging their microenvironment

Jan. 31, 2013 ? New research has shown the presence of a disease affecting small blood vessels, known as microangiopathy, in the bone marrow of diabetic patients. While it is well known that microangiopathy is the cause of renal damage, blindness and heart attacks in patients with diabetes, this is the first time that a reduction of the smallest blood vessels has been shown in bone marrow, the tissue contained inside the bones and the main source of stem cells.

These precious cells not only replace old blood cells but also exert an important reparative function after acute injuries and heart attacks. The starvation of bone marrow as a consequence of microangiopathy can lead to a less efficient healing in diabetic patients. Also, stem cells from a patient's bone marrow are the most used in regenerative medicine trials to mend hearts damaged by heart attacks. Results from this study highlight an important deficit in stem cells and supporting microenvironment that can reduce stem cells' therapeutic potential in diabetic patients.

The research team, led by Professor Paolo Madeddu, Chair of Experimental Cardiovascular Medicine in the School of Clinical Sciences and Bristol Heart Institute at the University of Bristol, investigated the effect of diabetes on bone marrow stem cells and the nurturing of small blood vessels in humans.

The new study, published in the American Heart Association journal Circulation Research, was funded by the British Heart Foundation (BHF).

The researchers have shown a profound remodelling of the marrow, which shows shortage of stem cells and surrounding vessels mainly replaced by fat, especially in patients with a critical lack of blood supply to a tissue (ischaemia). This means that, as peripheral vascular complications progress, more damage occurs in the marrow. In a vicious cycle, depletion of bone marrow stem cells worsens the consequences of peripheral ischaemia.

Investigation of underpinning mechanisms revealed that exposure of bone marrow stem cells to the high glucose level typical of diabetes mellitus impacts on "microRNAs," which are tiny RNA molecules controlling gene expression and hence biological functions. In particular, microRNA-155, that normally controls the production of stem cells, becomes dramatically reduced in bone marrow cells exposed to high glucose. Diabetes-induced deficits are corrected by reintroducing microRNA-155 in human stem cells. The authors foresee that microRNAs could be used to regain proper stem cells number in diabetes and fix stem cells before reintroduction into a patient's body.

Professor Paolo Madeddu said: "Our study draws attention to the bone marrow as a primary target of diabetes-induced damage. The research suggests that the severity of systemic vascular disease has an impact on bone marrow causing a precocious senescence of stem cells. More severe bone marrow pathologies can cause, or contribute to, cardiovascular disease and lead to worse outcomes after a heart attack, through the shortage of vascular regenerative cells. Clinical evidence indicates that achieving a good control of glucose levels is fundamental to prevent vascular complications, but is less effective in correcting microangiopathy. We need to work hard to find new therapies for mending damaged microvessels."

Professor Costanza Emanueli, Chair of Vascular Pathology and Regeneration at the University of Bristol and co-author of the paper, added: "MicroRNAs represent an attractive means to repair the marrow damage and generate "better" stem cells for regenerative medicine applications. We are working at protocols using microRNA targeting for enhancing the therapeutic potential of stem cells before their transplantation to cure heart and limb ischaemia, which are often associated with diabetes mellitus. More work is, however, necessary before using this strategy in patients."

The findings advance the current understanding of pathological mechanisms leading to collapse of the vascular niche and reduced availability of regenerative cells. The data provides a key for interpretation of diabetes-associated defect in stem cell mobilisation following a heart attack. In addition, the research reveals a new molecular mechanism that could in the future become the target of specific treatments to alleviate vascular complications in patients with diabetes.

Professor Jeremy Pearson, Associate Medical Director at the BHF said: "Professor Madeddu and his team have shown for the first time that the bone marrow in patients with diabetes can't release stem cells which are important for the repair of blood vessel damage commonly found in people with the disease.

"If we could restore the ability of the marrow to release stem cells there is potential to reduce the effects of diabetes, and prevent the devastating consequences of the condition such as blindness and amputation. Understanding more about injured blood vessel repair will also aid in the fight to mend hearts damaged after a heart attack, a vital research area we fund through our Mending Broken Hearts Appeal."

Music Review: Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble - Texas Flood [30th Anniversary Edition]

With the 1983 release of Texas Flood, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble set the rock world on fire. This was serious electric blues, by way of Texas, and the guitarist was an immediate sensation. Over the course of the next seven years, he would release four more studio albums, plus the live double Live Alive. On August 27, 1990, Vaughan's life was cut short in a helicopter accident. It was a tragic day for the music world, yet his music remains as vital as ever for millions of fans.

Vaughan's ongoing significance is reflected in the newly released 30th Anniversary Edition of Texas Flood. His music made a difference in a lot of people's lives. The two-disc package contains a remastered version of the original album, plus a second live CD from a 1983 performance at Ripley's Music Hall in Philadelphia. Vaughan's incendiary debut record has never sounded better, and the additional live material is phenomenal.

It had been quite a while since I had last listened to the album, but with the first notes of "Love Struck Baby," I was instantly reminded of what made it so special. For many of us, Texas Flood was a record that arrived like a bolt out of the blue. The musical landscape of 1983 was dominated by such one-hit wonders as Kajagoogoo and Men Without Hats. When something like the hit single "Pride and Joy" came out of your radio that year, you noticed. It is one of the best roadhouse songs ever, and Vaughan rips lick after lick off of his signature Strat.

The album has a lot more going for it than just "Pride and Joy" though. The slower blues groove of the title track is extremely inviting, and once again we are left to marvel at his playing. While I am a big fan of his vocals, Vaughan was just as comfortable letting his axe do all the work, as he does on the uptempo instrumentals "Testify" and "Rude Mood."

He also turns in a killer take on Buddy Guy's "Mary Had a Little Lamb." The smoldering "Dirty Pool" is another highlight. With this track, I am reminded of Robin Trower's "Bridge of Sighs," although if anything, Vaughan's tune is even darker. The original album concluded with "Lenny," which is a slow dazzler. For anyone who ever wondered where the Hendrix comparisons came from, "Lenny" is a place to start.

Then again, there are the Hendrix songs that Vaughan and his band Double Trouble played live. Although it may have appeared that he was an "overnight sensation" with the release of Texas Flood, the group had been playing the club circuit for years before being signed. The nine-song set captured on the bonus disc was recorded on October 30, 1983 at Ripley's Music Hall in Philadelphia. The album had just been released, and he was on fire.

The night was mostly a showcase for the songs from Texas Flood, and he opens with "Testify." In addition to "Testify," he performs "Pride and Joy," "Texas Flood," "Love Struck Baby," and "Mary Had a Little Lamb." "Tin Pan Alley (aka Roughest Place in Town)" was not on the original album, but was added as a bonus track later. It appears both on the studio and live set here.

As great as these songs are though, it is his versions of Hendrix tunes which really blow me away. He performs three, "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)," and a medley of "Little Wing"/"Third Stone from the Sun." Vaughan released a studio version of "Voodoo Child" on his second album, Couldn't Stand the Weather, and it also appeared on Live Alive.

"Voodoo Child" is the third song on the Philly disc, and it is incredible. Of the many versions I have heard, this one could be the best. There is something about the entire performance that sets it apart from the other live recordings of his. As the announcer informs us, this was a radio simulcast on station WMMR. The trio upped their game considerably for it. Even though Vaughan was of a different era than Hendrix, and was less enamored of guitar pyrotechnics than his elder, he could most definitely pull them off. I would not call his playing a "carbon-copy" by any means, but the tone he gets is remarkably similar. This is a powerful version of the song.

As good as "Voodoo Child" is though, it is the closing "Little Wing"/"Third Stone from the Sun" that knocked me out. Vaughan's version of "Little Wing" is an instrumental, which emphasizes the beauty of the melody. He also gets in a fantastic solo, as anyone who has heard it will attest. The idea of coupling it with "Third Stone from the Sun" was a stroke of genius. The entire night was fantastic, and the second CD alone makes getting this 30th Anniversary Edition worth buying.

Stevie Ray Vaughan was the type of musician who comes along once in a generation. He updated the blues enough to introduce it to a new audience, yet he never lost sight of what made the form so special in the first place. He was a master, and this set is a marvelous tribute to his talent.
